Thanks Gapples. Out of curiosity what exactly is a training manual compared to say a operators manual?
As I said I'm not registered on eBay as never use it. No offence to you or any honest sellers but don't trust it too much. Would definitely be interested in the 74 series if you could let me know what it fetches on eBay
Thanks Stu

That OK Stuff, its a place you have to be a bit careful.
An operator manual explains to a driver how to get the best out of a tractor or machine, how to maintain it etc.
A training manual is given to technicians, like myself, who go on manufacturer product training courses.
It explains how to strip down & repair the tractor, it goes into hydraulic setting, power steering & brakes.
Its what we use to assist with fault finding & repairs.

Thanks. I'd be really grateful if you could let me know how much you get on eBay as sounds like just what I'm looking for. Was planning getting operators & workshop manuals but this should help me for now.
Never worked on tractors so bit of learning curve. Will get there I'm sure
Thanks Stu

Stuff if you get this training manual you will not need a workshop manual.
If you need any help with a 674 just ask & myself or someone will assist you

Thanks again Gapples. I've asked a few questions & everyone has been really helpful.
Having never worked on a tractor before its all new to me which is why I'm after manual. I trained as a car mechanic but left the trade 20 odd years back so like starting from scratch.
Main issue I've got is smoking quite badly from No4 cylinder closest to the flywheel. Thinking its piston rings but need manual before pulling it apart. The exhaust manifold gets hotter on all the other cylinders after running it a few minutes whereas No4 isn't as hot so definitely something wrong.

This manual & to be honest all training manuals from IH doesn't bother going in depth with Engines, they'll give torque settings & such but they assume if you are going onto a training course from a dealer you should understand how an engine works.
The manual does go in depth on every other area though.

Right, your problem, first thing to do is set the tappets & swap an injector from say number 1/& see if the fault shifts.
If its still on number 4 you need to do a compression test, bottom line though even if you need yo do pistons & liners its an easy enough job.

Someone said about swapping injectors round. Wouldn't of thought of doing that.
From looking at the lump I thought it shouldn't be to hard to rebuild it if necessary although I'm hoping it's not needed.
Silly question as you mentioned it put could setting tappets help ? Only didn't think it would make any difference. Although the manual you have doesn't cover engines in detail just the torque settings will be useful if it's a strip down.
The engine sounds fine without any rattles or knocking which is why in thinking it's likely to be the rings. After it's been running a while & warmed up it doesn't smoke as badly although it does still smoke all the time.
Thanks for the input I'll have a look next time I'm at my yard with some time spare.
Stu

I've looked at a couple compression testers but unsure which to get. The kit says all the adaptors for the glow plugs (not needed as doesn't have any) & the adaptors for the injectors are metric. Would my old IH not be imperial?? Due to its age etc?

Hello very late to this thread, do you by any chance have a training manual for the 56 series 856xl to be exact, I've recently bought one which needs quiet a bit of work and to have a reference would be very handy, thanx very much, Rich

Hi it's a 1985 German built Case 856xl, with an off centre ZF 4wd front axel, I think it'll be one of the first after the change from International. It's suffering all the usual problems, a bit of rot to the cab lack of grease to the front axle pivot points, hydraulic pumps getting a bit tired and the manifold after the turbo has about burnt away. I'm finding the price of parts very expensive for it and not as easy find as some past projects, just priced up the 90 degree elbow after the turbo and got a price back of £768, can't find a non genuine one anywhere so think I'll be making one at that price.

Thanks very much I'll give them a try, keep meaning to put a few pictures up it's going to be a long term project never seam to have time in summer and with a workshop to build in the autumn there won't be much happening very fast. Have you got yours finished, how much was there todo on it?

Here is my second 856......nearly finished
The first one had the con rod out the side of the engine and half the Scottish population of rats under the cab and in the roof just bought it for the Dromore hitch and felt sorry for it and restored it, a steep learning curve but thoroughly enjoyable and addictive
