Serviced agronomists, do they take advantage of the customer?

Today the serviced agronomist we use recommended a dose on both the wheat and barley for different diseases etc. £16 an acre in the wheat and £11 in the barley. Seemed very strong to me when it’s looking very very clean and no issues so far.

What was the recommendation? Seems very excessive for a t3

if you have had the wet weather there is definitely a risk of fusarium and other ear diseases, however i would be budgeting 5-10 acre for wheat.

That’s more than my spend on a SDHI plus ctl T2 !

T3 is costing us less than that per hectare and it’s pretty robust

I know serviced agronomy is easy to shoot at but it has a place. Agronomists will know which of their clients will be slow at applying their recs and Adjust has a more flexible timing than ordinary 3C chlormequat.

Smaller farms take nearly as much time as larger ones to walk and administer and few opt for separating crop walking from supply of chems, being happy for the agronomist to make the recommendations and order the materials.

Most of today’s independent agronomists did their training with distributors who actively recruit young trainees. There is a place for serviced agronomy and I can see why many choose the easy option without really knowing which costs them more.

I’ll bet most growers would rather have clean crops that stay standing than quibble about every last penny spent. No doubt folk like @Agrobi may comment...

@Brisel I think you have it well covered, and your are better at doing it concisely than me... [emoji6] all I need to say is I agree. [emoji106] could be my shortest reply yet!

My serviced agronomist recommended doing nothing on the spring barley for now.... they aren’t all trying to fleece you
Likewise. No fungicide on the S. Barley, Peas and the Oats and no wheat T3. So there are some good ones about. I am though probably going to change and move to an independent. As I have seen some price comparisons and there is quite a saving to be had, even with the independents fee.

I’m thinking the same as well! Anyone know any good independents In Herefordshire?

@Rob-B Is there mildew in the crop or something , I can understand the CTL and prothio in the barley .
We used siltra and CTL for the barley and it was 13 quid an acre ..

Your wheats are getting the kitchen sink and more thrown at them , I'd be questioning your agronomist as to why he feels it needs so much chucking at ... For reference our t3 costs for Skyfall were 7 30 and zyats 5.25 per acre .
Just using straight azoles .

Our T3 has cost £6.50 ha Teb and only been applied to milling wheat and seed wheat for hss. My independent agronomist said that was ample. I am in a buying group.

No sign of anything untoward in the crops. So I was reluctant to put anything else on until signs of a issue. It’s crop walked daily anyway.
