Setup plough legs

I machine lots of legs. I make new legs for TS86’s and take the bend out of 59 legs.

First of all you need to find the flat face of the leg. Clamp it down on that face and then machine the other face square and parallel to it. Machine the mating faces at the top of the leg as you go. Take off as little as possible.
next comes the fancy bit. You need to machine the frog mating face so that the point is tipped in towards work and the heel of the landside is tipped out to land. It needs to be done in such a way that the frog is vertical when bolted on. That’s what the horseshoe Mark is in the middle of the leg. At this point and on the leading edge of the leg it should be about 1.5mm deep. ideally the mark should have surfaced before it reaches the back of the leg. Done properly then about 6mm should have been taken off the face of the leg at the front leading edge.View attachment 909525

The difference between the FR EP and a Ransomes plough is that the legs and part of the frame are casted steel. The legs are machined and drilled afther casting. Therefore in better shape (smaler tolerance) than the heated and pressed parts of Ransomes. Ransomes legs wil not fit on a FR EP and the other way around.
Some say a the EP is an Ransomes plough, but the casted parts are made at the Ford foundry and assembled at the Ford factory or foundry using Ransomes plough body's. I think because they had a larger capacity than needed at the time. Afther a view years more Ransomes parts were used and less casted Ford parts. Mine is an early model. It has the depth wheel from a Ford Elite trailed plough. Found four others here in the Netherlands so far.

totally different frame and legs. The three bolts at the top of the leg are justified in the opposite way. Two on top and one below. You can drill 59 legs in that orientation but the ep leg casting means that you can’t get one middle hole in at the top. Lots of people run 59’s with only two bolts in the leg.
The cross shaft and mountings are also way different to a 59. Better off with a 59 all round if you can get one.

Howard, Could you explane why the TS59 is a better plough than the EP?
IMHO the layout of the frame is not much different between the two, only the cranckshaft kan be placed above and under the frame on a TS59.
I thought the EP was made for the rear end of the E27N and the New Major and there fore the cranckshaft is better placed above the frame. The EP is also able to take different ploughbodys.

Both frames will take any of the Ransomes bodies. For competstove ploughing then there are more options with a 59, mostly down to the legs. The mountings for the adjusting screws are also stronger on a 59. The handles with Deeper and Wider look good on an EP though!
