Shale on cow track

Anyone got a rough idea how many tonnes of shale per foot/meter on a cow track?
I'm looking at 15ft wide but unsure as to the depth of shale required for a good stable surface

When we tracked here, the contractor used 6t dumpers tipped pile against pile, each load did about 4 to 6 foot, more than a foot deep . Luckily stone is something we have in abundance on the farm.

When ever we have used shale on a track it always turns to mud. Looks good in dry weather but any rain the top just goes (only taken my father 30 yrs to see this). Hope yours is better than ours. 9 to 12 inches should be okay if only cows and light traffic on it should'nt it?

The problem with on farm shale or rock is if its too easy to dig it will turn to muck on a track if its hard to dig it will cost a fortune to dig.The best type of material ive used for roads is a sand gravel type material easy dug and has no sharp stone

Our last shale track was done in 2018 .Used 10ft of terram digger dumped bucket fulls side ways nearly touching then roughly leveled with back actor then finished withfront bucket .rolled good as .In fact drove on it hedge trimming the other day hard as .Only for cows really .
It's got to be the Wright shale nearest to us is Brayford South Molton. Its the transport that adds most of cost .
Pm me if you want to know more. Some of our tracks have been down 10 years now holding up well with no feet problems

Yeah everyone I talk to locally uses brayford shale
I've got a hard track there already but it's flinty cobbles, so either glassy knobbles or sharp edges everywhere
Hoping to put 4 inches of shale on top and roll roll roll roll roll roll

Is the terram necessary?
I think it is when on clay .We even used it under westleigh 6f5 stone when making a more vehicle track then blinded it with shale
For the cost bit more than £1 metre worth it as firms up ground stone placed on .
Just unroll on surface if flat and spread stone better if raised a bit .
