Share farming beef and sheep

Location

Any opportunities in wales? Am i mad to venture down this route or worth a try?

Any info appreciated

Defo worth a try and your not mad, the problem is thou that profit margins are very low if any in the beef/sheep job currently so unless you find someone that is looking to retire but still want to farm the land and not rent it out instead then I wouldn't imagine there will be many people intrested in share farming currently.

"profit margins are very low" and about to get worse, much worse....! Unless some U-turn leads us to a free trade agreement with the EU on 31s October

Funny ole times, if i was a lad given 300 acres i wouldnt no what was best to do in the current climate other than letting it and keeping the sfp. Anything else would involve massive set up costs

Will be a deal done don't you worry or an extension, twal be one or the other!

Lamb prices wont be any worse than last year come next spring and actually could well be a shade higher due to less numbers about.

You could get £90 acre for BPS and if its cutting ground another £100/150 from a local dairy/ AD plant, no way in hell you can make anywhere near £200+ clear profit acre from farming beef cattle/ sheep currently!

£60k+ for doing nothing, you would be mad to farm it!

Yes your correct unfortunatly, i think the big will get bigger and the keen lads/lasses should work for them rather than struggle trying to rent and share farm.

Getting bigger is waste of time once you get into paying big rent and wages might as well not bother it’s a waste of time.with huge risks

Also if that farm has some half decent sheds on it you could rent them out for storage etc and earn say another £20k a year so 80k income off 300 acres.

Makes the return's from beef/sheep farming look pathetic!

Will either be a part time job or as you say a large numbers game going forward!

Very large local farm/ contractor rents a big block of arable/ grass ground near here, been farming it for 6+ years now, by the time they allow for all the costs for the chaps driving to and fro from the main farm with muck/ straw/ grain/ fert/ silage/ moving cattle etc etc they worked out they actually have lost money on it every year but one in real terms!

I believe it.
When i say the big getting bigger i mean those farming 2000 + acres now will get bigger and spread costs.
probably, a little fire can warm a man , a bonfire can seriously burn him ! An interest rate rise will finish more than brexit.

I'm sure a scheme has been set up by the Yfc or farming connect to pair up farmers that want to retire and give youngsters a chance. hopefully someone will be along to confirm which. good luck.

Yes there's a few examples about that have been facilitated by farming connect. There was someone on Ffermio last week that had gone into share farming near Llandovery and I know someone not far from here as well.

Peredur Owen is the guy near Llandovery. He seems to be going great guns. He’s got an excellent landowner there as well.

Hauora Romney is another example of a Wales based sheep shar farming company.

one good thing that might emerge from Brexit, is that more chances occur for the younger generation, and I would always say, do your sums, half the end figure, and if it still stacks up, get on in there. There are a lot of greedy farmers, looking at share farming, listening to even greedier land agents, that would sink a keen lad, without a second thought.
