I'm vintage and shear my own120 ewes and gang of rams. Do them in a small pen with them stood up. Grip them lightly with my legs and can lean on hurdle to save my back.
Sheep quite happy and don't fight. As you can imagine it's not quick but I get through them in a couple of weeks doing small batches at a time. Quite enjoy it as I don't wreck my back. Going to start on lambs soon.
I'm now very vintage, and first "lock down" clipped 70 or so mixed ewes hoggs and couple of tups, just myself, catch clip and fleeces. Over 3 days as were more time spent getting b--g--- in, dosing etc. Was quite relaxing.
Last two clippings using contract shearer as numers more than double. Maybe next year do a few myself.

Was taught the Bowen method starting at 15. Good old ATB. Pity was courses were too late in season with little chance to get practise until following season. By 18 the challenge was to do 100 big park ewes in a day. By 20 it was 200. Did it a few times. BUT WITH A CATCHER, machine usually didnt stop for 20 sheep .Then clean, oil 2 min rest.
Only real disaster was a Romney tup we had. As a 3 shear took 3 of us to get him off his feet, then the blo--y hand piece wouldn't reach tail head or neck. Ended up with him standing, father holding him with a baler twin round his neck. It was easy tail head to neck, split fleece, then long bows each side, bit of a fiddle triming legs. Two decent fleeces where should have been one. Tup never notice I had cut twine on 3rd or 4th blow, just stood.

Thems were the days.

My rams are the easiest to clip with my sheep stood up method. Don't even need to grip them, they just stand there. They're probably thinking ....yea whatever. Wouldn't like to attempt it close to, or during, tupping though.

That is exactly what I am having to do at the moment just been watching as many videos of shearing that I can.

I have watched the British wool board training video a few times now and found it really useful.

I am hoping to get on a course next year if I can get it booked quick enough.
I see Robbie Hislop has a beginner course on the 9th of September, no idea if it's booked but if your keen, it would be worth you enquiring.

Just came across this on YouTube - the man who gave us the modern shearing method.
Note his moccasins :) I remember shearers making their own, at the start of the season, out of a hessian bag - cut out with dagging shears and stitched together with sisal baler band.
I also remember an old shepherd, who had been to one of his demonstrations, saying that after Godfrey had clipped a few, he then put a blindfold on. Apparently he was only slightly slower blindfolded than when he could see what he was doing :X3:
