Shearing

Now Pete, I don’t want to be a jerk, but I’m going to be a jerk!
Two lads who work for us fencing are sheep shearers, they HATE it if anybody mentions shearing because of maggots, they say shearing is a time of year and has nothing to do with maggots as that’s a management issue!
Just saying

This. Nothing worse than being asked to shear sheep that aren't ready. (To be fair dry hoggs are different as they're usually ok). If people complained about maggots and that we couldn't get there soon enough they were told they should have put some cover on them a long time ago and we will get there when we can! Had to stop shearing at some places and go back later because they simply weren't ready to shear. If you don't put fly cover on and don't shear your own sheep the risk is yours not your shearers!

Yes, I completely agree. I don’t force anybody to shear my sheep and if they’re not ready I don’t mind being told.

Last year the contractor struggled a bit but at no time did he say he thought it was time to give up.

He doesn’t want to be shearing them after we’ve sprayed them and I don’t blame him, but we have other things to do which take up time, so if we can strike a happy medium for the welfare of the sheep then surely it’s all good.

I certainly wouldn’t mind paying a bit more if he struggles.

Dont go and get long bevel combs.

Available at most ag stores are the...
' lister shepherds standard ' complete packs with the correct 2 cutters and a comb .. a narrow comb with a 5mm medium bevel (y)

Sometimes I also use the 'liscop standard pack' for bellying and docking or even shearing .. i get them from mvf also in a pack with a cutter to

Horner Rambo mains / transformer24v clipper is a heck of a tool for a novice also ir. More ummph than a 12v and more freedom if you end up in the wrong position.. just dont let them hook their back legs around the cord ....:D
