Shed levels advice

Looking to put up a new shed, but the ground it currently sloping. Need to get a laser level out and work out exactly how much in each direction.

Digging out will create a void at the back unless a large area is re-profiled
Filling in might make large gradients at the front on the apron area.

I wondered if it might make sense to have a professional design the right amount of digging/filling to get the best use of the site as a whole. A bit of money spent getting the first bits right could save a lot of money and hassle in the longer term.

The trouble is....I don't know where to go....especially if I want sensibly priced advice that doesn't run into many thousands! I imagine a topo f/b civils consultant probably wouldn't leave much change from £5k based on my experience of "professionals".

Anybody done anything like this before for a sensible budget?

I would imagine that someone like connops would be able to work it out/advise if they thought they had a chance of the work. If you were able to take levels in advance and send them something I am sure they could work our roughly the cut and fill needed to lower the front a bit and build the back up. If that's what your looking for?

As above. Spend 15 minutes writing a brief of what it is that your doing, some site photos and what it is your wanting from them and then email and call to discuss with a couple of local surveyors/civil engineers that will do set outs for buildings earthworks. I'm sure they could give you a fairly good indication over the phone of likely costs or better still get them to have a look on site to provide you a quote.

Otherwise it's the dumpy level, some poles, pen paper and a calculator...

Working out the cut/fill for the shed isn't too big an issue. But it's how it fits into the wider environment, whether there's room to reprofile and "take out" the sharper gradients created by flattening the floor. That in itself could determine the floor level of the building more than anything else.

Will half way work out @Steevo ? So dig out half and fill half?

I'd rather pay for @Forever Fendt or @RWG Contracts to come out rather than a surveyor.

I'd agree with your last comment for sure!!!

If I had the beans to sub the whole job out to @RWG Contracts I'd be delighted to have a turnkey job done.

Half way would be a good starting point though. Simple as it is I'd never thought of doing it that way.

I'd work off half cut, and half fill. When I started my place, the side of the first shed was the existing ground level, then fill in front of that, so all the shed is on firm ground, but the track, and field is all made up, so I'm not too worried if it settles.

I had a guy do a topo survey on a small holding 2 acres with a load of old carp buildings and a cottage ,The survey was for planning to knock old house down and rebuild a new one ,He charged £250 + vat inc drawings and a C/D with the info on,He said he would come back and mark house out with profiles for brickwork and mark centreline of dig with line paint for £100,@Steevo do you have your own level ,maybe sort it yourself

Wow, that sounds very good value to me!

I do have an auto laser level and was planning to take some basic levels myself to see current ground fall/rise to give me an initial idea.

Mine was £900 (n)

I know my little shed build was only a much smaller amateur job but you'd be surprised with the accuracy you can get with a water level if you don't have a laser level!
