sheep abortion

There is plenty of advice to be found on t'internet to suggest that it 'might' help. Faced with no other treatment option available, I would certainly go through with Oxytet if I had a storm again (not routinely every year like a lot round here do for Enzo though:facepalm:).

Just a couple of the links I found in a few minutes on Google:
http://www.farmhealthonline.com/disease-management/sheep-diseases/campylobacteriosis/
http://www.westpointfarmvets.co.uk/sheep-abortion/

First link says no evidence it does anything. I've complained about the second link and will see if I can get it adjusted or taken down. Have a look on something like NADIS if you want good quality impartial advice with expert oversight (any one can put any old crap on the internet). http://www.nadis.org.uk/bulletins/abortion-in-ewes.aspx

Re your comment " I would certainly go through with Oxytet if I had a storm again ", see my reply to the post below:

Very hard not to try everything when you're at the pit face

Well yes and no. We are talking batch treatment of animals with antibiotic. I hope to hell you on't have enough antibiotic in stock to treat all these animals and therefore you are going to have to source a reasonably large volume from your vet. Very simply I would not prescribe it or allow you to have it in the situation where we had confirmed campylobater abortion.

The use of antibiotics in this way is not your decision, it's down to a professional to prescribe them. Those professionals are under a hell of a lot more pressure to reduce the use and reliance on antibiotics.

does the capitals mean you are shouting?!

Yes! It bloody does.

It's stupid worrying about antibiotics, there's so few consciensious about it now that it's not worth the bother,
Kids take them willy nilly now for a cough when parents bully the doctor, the only input he farmers will have is they'll be blamed.
As I said before some vets in your country are giving out scourhalt according to what i hear at levels which I think is excessive.

Being civic minded is only for fools, people littering our gateways, dumping across our hedges, Killing fish with wet wipes.
And the civic minded fools pay for it all

Yep, the way I look at it, if I can get through this years lambing both emotionally and financially and still want to work with sheep then the future can only be better.
Doubled my flock 3 years ago. Bought alot of in lamb ewes as ground became available in the spring. Got on grand. Following year over 30% of flock aborted with toxo. Was the hardest work I ever put in and f**k all I could do only let it run its course. I will never forget it as it was the only time i felt like jacking it in.It was tight financially that year but i did get through it but by god i would not dream of missing toxo and enzo vaccine in my replacements. I book it at weaning when I pull out ewe lambs. Of course i would never jack it in. Sheep addiction is a disease with no cure! Keep the chin up

Test results back we have some eae. Bloods taking longer for toxo. 22% of my ewes have aborted or had alive but died soon after lambs. Vaccinating next time! Longest week of my life!!!!

Yes waiting for them to start is a long wait, once you get a few lamb ok then you will feel a bit better, still doesn't make up for the losses and yeld ewes after a long winter but once they start lambing they seem to stop aborting, that what experience lv had.

We had another abortion yesterday, that's 7 out of a bunch of 50. Today we have had 4 ewes lamb all ok bar one pair which were a bit wobbly on their feet. All ewes have plenty of milk though.

Mine seem to have settled down in the past week. Must be a coincidence after giving them antibiotics

We have jabbed all our ewes still to lamb with Alamycin as the lab has confirmed (eventually) that we have enzootic abortion. Had another one abort today. Just hope we don't get anymore.

Should we cull the ewes that have aborted or give them another go?

Speaking to the vet today and he said once they have had it they won't do it again but it's the ones that did nt do it this year could do it next year!! I am going to vaccinate for it.everything expect cull ewes. I cannot afford to do this again and its the first time is the dearest as after this you only do your replacements

Yes I plan to vaccinate my ewes this year, vet said the vaccine is about £2.20 a go.

Joy of joys, I am now near enough to the due date that I am getting live but very weak lambs in addition to the aborted dead lambs....sigh

I am not looking forward to the next month.

Had a ewe lamb today with 2 severely deformed lambs that looked very like schmallenberg

Hoped it’s an isolated case. Has anyone else seen it in mid lambing flocks?

Most should gain immunity, but some can become carriers, spreading it forever. If you vaccinate the whole flock, you will protect them from those carriers though.
Bear in mind that some will already be infected and may still abort next year IIRC, the next year your losses should be lower.

Yes but only 1 so could have just been one of those things. It's spine was fused in a bend and it's legs were deformed. Couldn't work it out when I was trying to lamb it and didn't think I'd get it out.
