sheep abortion

Lambing 2017 was horrendous with catastrophic losses from Campylobacter. Lambing 2018 was a lot lot better but we had a very low scanning. Whether this was down to the incredibly dry year or possibly over fat ewes that had aborted I don't know. Not terrible but a disappointing 176%. Abortion rate was very low which is perhaps not surprising. I've since given CampyVax to theaves and ewe lambs so we are at least protected from that.

Aborted ewes were run as a seperate flock on the poorer grass or following ewe lambs. They did a great job of tidying up fields and used up stocks of old hay/ silage etc. I can't say we treated them badly as they still ended up over fat at tupping but they were cheaper to keep.

Still keeping going with sheep and have reached a milestone this year. We put exactly 1,000 ewes to the ram and 182 ewe lambs. Hoping for a good scan and good lambing this year! At this number at least we should have a few lambs to sell at the end of the year!!!

I've concluded that having sheep is a hard way to make a living. Good luck to anyone following me in this ridiculous venture.
