Sheep bedding

We have green wood chips from branches pruned around electric wires last week. We had thought to use them on sheep shed floor then add straw as usual. They are obviously heating in the trailer as giving off steam. Should we just forget about using them?

They will just be a nuisance when you muck out.

But a thin layer of sawdust under the bedding makes it easier to muck out, particularly on an earth floor.

We use woodchip 6-10 inches deep then barley straw or best wheat on top. They do eat a lot of their straw but they seem to like it! Once you have it spread out it cools very quickly. You do have to like it up for a few months to rot and spread but I find if you like the whole lot up the straw muck breaks down the woodchip within a month.
