Sheep breeds why?

well, I have a Dorset teaser for my Texel ewes and I think this theory is overstated. What I think is fair to say is that the range of performance massively overlaps between the breeds.

Yes, I see what you mean, but I think the idea is that the differences between the average sheep of any given breeds are perhaps not so extreme as the differences found in the extremes within the same breed. If you see what I mean?

To say all of one breed are 'better' than all of another breed is simply not true.

I’m going to throw it out there ...... the number of breeds and types kept in the uk is daft. So much sentiment and foolishness 😂 tin hat on! I’d give you lot the choice of six breeds and that’s it!

Frank Bough. How can you have an interbreed showcase with 6 entries...

Indeed, and the more inbred they are the narrower the range.

There are plenty of rare breeds that people keep trying too revive. Grandad has a saying... “those feckers are rare for a reason” the industry won’t miss 90% of the rare breeds. It’s only the hobbyists that keep them going on the whole!

No no......

Exlana
Romney
Cheviot
Welshie
Texel
Charolais

I will let you swop blackie for the Cheviot or welshie if you ask nicely ........

You are also allowed to x the above breeds if you like.
Errrrrr..... I’ll just strap my tin hat on. Blackie for the Romney and BFL for the Exlana (I don’t want BFL myself but someone will have too use them on the Cheviots, Blackies & welshies... 😂😁

No mate, keep the hill breeds in the hills. Medium sized, white faced, self replacing sheep, is THE way to go. Not messing about breeding stuff here to ship there to put something else over etc. It’s nonsense. 😂 😉

Breeds are irrelevant. They're an artificial construct brought about when a group of people decided to categories animals by how they looked.

It's traits and genes that matter.

that’s like saying that whether the ginger with the big mamas is a stripper or not is irrelevant...breeds give you a degree of certainty, especially if they’re inbred...
