Sheep checking.

Hi, I check sheep 99% of the time every single day. Just had a barrage of abuse as a ewe cast since yesterday.
Now I checked them at 6.30 but was late today around midday.
I dont think my actions deserved me being shouted at and called cruel.
We got around 3000 sheep and with a lot on electric at the moment its bloody hard work. Ewe in question is fine too.
Almost impossible to farm sheep anymore with all the problems that go with it.
Is it just me?

No, take no notice of them, you do your best for your sheep....if a proper price was paid for what we produce another couple of men could be employed on farms to do all the work involved....as it is, one or two people have to work very hard, dawn till dusk ,to get round the stock in order to feed a very ungrateful nation!

You havnt got to that number of ewes without being a good/keen shepherd unless you’ve got a massive income stream from elsewhere so don’t worry about it!!

checking 3,000 a day is some task unless there in big mobs?

I remember moving a mob of ewes and lambs into a new field years ago, and going back 2 hours later to take some min buckets or something. In that 2 hour window, a ewe had got on her back and was close to dead (May grass & warm). Unless you are living with them 24/7, you can't guarantee to be there to spot her straight away.

Ignore shouty person, or ask why they chose to leave the poor animal suffering, as they'd obviously noticed it.

We had some inlamb Hampshires which seemed to always be getting cast. They where in a field next to the road and for the shortish time they were there (until they came in) we checked several times a day. One day I just got back from checking them and I got a call from a local farmer say one was cast. I told a few people the story of how I must have missed it by seconds and what a good job somebody was kind enough to call me, to which my mate said 'if he was that f**king kind he would have picked it up for you'

No matter what time of day you've checked em, one can always stick its legs in the air 10 mins after you've left.
Thing I hate is finding a dead cast inlamber in the morning and it's still warm.

Should have told the good lady you conduct a considerable time each day conducting checks of all your sheep and ask if she would like a voluntary, unpaid job and supplementing your inspections with her own hourly checks... when she refuses you can tell her if she isn't willing to do it for free then why the fk should you be expected to and would she kindly fk off....

You can't win them all, some people have an attitude problem, and antagonising them further doesn't help anyone (however amusing). There will be nothing of interest to RSPCA I'm sure, but that doesn't mean the buggers wont ring them...
Better to educate them, and hope they might tip the next one for you.
