Sheep dip disposal

Just running through the options.
I can either apply for a licence to dispose of it on our ground costs £350 ish for the initial application then £150ish a year after that.
The other option is get a waste disposal company to come and take it away for me which is tempting as get a ticket so say it's gone and assume less hassle than the other hopefully no inspections!
but unsure of the cost of this does anybody else do this and if so what are the costs?

Look't into this myself. I was looking to start a mobile dipping round but we dont have maney acres to loose the spent dip on so i contacted a lot of waste disposel contractors and when you can get a quote because alot did not want to deal with it it was working out at over £500 per 1000litres and i was putting in a 10,000 litre storage tank. Did not add up for me

Ok thanks sounds like a licence is the best way to go then just thought it would be less hassle if could get it taken away for the same money
licence is the way forward,E A dont like you storing any amount of waste dip on farm, all storage has to be bunded and most companies only want to collect largish amounts, licence fairly simple and spreading is allowed at 5000l per ha per year

When i did my dipping course they told me if you hadnt already got a licence youd struggle to get one. Not sure if its true though?
The dipping contractor that took us for the course gets it taken by a waste company, he's on here but i forgotten his username

Ensure you have the relevant documents like the Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Sheep Dips, else should be working under the supervision of one who holds this certificate. Those involved should be trained and competent.

Check if the product you are intending to use might have any harmful side effects on you. Seek the advice of Vet whether, it is needed at all, look for hazards, Choose the treatment method, the facilities required.

Experts at waste recycling facility Ontario says that one should dispose of spent dip as soon as possible after dipping since they are the cause of the increasing levels of organophosphates in water courses. It is no longer acceptable to dispose of sheep dip to soak-aways.

Operators should use Personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect their health. PPE should be clean and check for any tears, worn out areas or holes. Waterproof leggings or trousers made of nitrile or PVC is a good measure. Check this doc for in depth details http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ais41.pdf.

Groundwater lies below the surface of the ground. If you carelessly use or release toxic sheep dip on your land it could pollute groundwater. You could be imprisoned and subject to an unlimited fine if you:

  • spread waste dip to land without an environmental permit

  • allow hazardous substances to enter groundwater

  • spread non-hazardous pollutants (eg from purl or bloom dips)
Polluted groundwater can drain into and contaminate drinking water sources such as boreholes, wells and streams.
