Hi, Does anyone Know of someone that makes Round Bale feeder/ silage feeder , where the Bale is loaded from the top as normal, but the sheep have to eat from the bottom as in the picture below.
I could do with one for a square bale thou.
Thanks

Would that feeder not restrict intakes too, as well as potentially reducing wasteage?:scratchhead: If forage intakes are restricted, doesn't it mean more concentrates are needed to get the same performance/nutritional intakes on most systems?

Not a clue, reducing wastage in the singles we've got locked in the shed is what we're aiming for. They don't seem to waste much out in the fields unless it's turned mouldy or had days of rain on it?

Why would it reduce consumtion ?

Anything that makes it a bit harder to pull the feed out, will reduce intakes.

I went to a sheep meeting a few weeks back, where a vet was discussing feeders. She reckoned intakes would be depressed if you didn't have at least one ring feeder for every 40 ewes IIRC, even on ad-lib. I usually have 1:100 for my early lambers and thought they were having it easy with only 60 on there this year. I'm not totally convinced she was right though....

I Suppose, she's got a point, But least they shouldnt be standing on their Back feed trying to reach the top, and getting rest of Bale covered in sh!t, which they then refuse to eat.
Getting one made so i might Know a bit more in a Week or So.

It's not like they've got anything else to do all day though?

I like the look of that feeder, I think it would be good for feeding my deer although I would blow chopped silage into it with a shredder. With regard to numbers of stock per ring I allow 20 deer per ring so there is no competition whilst feeding. Maximum return from forage is my goal so anything I can do to help them get large quantities of silage into them quickly allows them the rest of the day to turn it into money for me.

I'd be happy with 1 to 100, silage stays fresher with a bale feeding 200 for a day, much longer in wet weather the silage would be going sour .wouldn't be easy to get net of bale in that feeder
