Suffolks, big docile animals and you can sell the progeny, don't get ryelands a friend had them and they just seemed to die and had no mothering instinct ! (Edit I've just seen they are to lamb outside, still suffolks but lamb them in may ! )

exlanas can be a bit wild....i 2nd the jacob nomination:)
mine aren't wild.. this years ewe lambs are especially good in that respect like their father.
How find them lambing when pure, they prolific like lleyns?
Also do you find easy sell on pure ewe lambs or better selling dead?
mine weren't quite as prolific as the Lleyn last year (as being my first year lambing them ) best to ask the learned Tim W about them …
I don't sell females as i'm replacing /growing my flock unless they are not good enough to keep ...then they go with the wethers , yes deadweight .

Where are you based? When would you aim to lamb? Something docile that thinks with it's stomach if it’s for kids

Based down wiltshrie /somerset border
Old pp and lambing outside in april.

To be honest i keep coming back to lleyns i like them as breed just bit to prolific pure,
but as i had a local farm who buy all my shearlings ewes and they still would if got them again.
Its just how prolific they are pure

Maybe hold them tighter over tupping time would sort it.

Exlanas would be similar to the Lleyns in the prolificacy stakes
I'm just over the way if you want to take a look

But why not just get some Lleyn x Tex or even just some mules ----still lamb outdoors ok , bit less prolific? easy to sell at your local mart?

View attachment 750702 Blue texels-east lambing, good carcass and great temperament for kids

I'd have to agree with part of Tim W & ThePits comments, a splash of some sort of commercial type texel over Llyens should lower the lambing %, docile for kid to be involved and produces a marketable lamb.

I love your sales technique Tim. Whenever I hear you talking to someone who wants to buy sheep, you seem to be telling them to buy something other than Exlana :D:D

What about some Southdowns or similar asaa different option?
Smallish but not pointless and lots of different markets for them live and dead if the kids do eventually want to do a bit of showing and breed pedigree etc?

Fly strike will be enough to turn anyone off keeping sheep ...its one of the biggest modern day sheep problems I reckon, well I know I hate it with a vengeance ...when im always busy not wanting to have to leave off and go and sort it out.

the biggest advantage by far with shedders imo.

novelty might wear off with kids as well …. then back to dad looking after them to just keep the paddock tidy ...well and produce a few lambs as well hopefully and one for the freezer...

Exactly my thoughts worse thing about sheep
Shedders do appeal to me alsobg as can sell shearling ewe lamvs the same as i could with lleyns as i made more then selling lambs dead,

But if @Tim W said there seems to be a market for shedders that arent molly coddled
So im sure i could sell my few shearlings as well as i did lleyn shearlings?

I say sheep for kids but i be looking after flock until kids old enough as,kids are 2-4 years old,
i was brought up with livestock(cattle&pigs) and i
Loved it and think it make you understand were food comes from and learn about death and taking responsibility.
Also this is why i want to choose the right breed as i say a flock of upto 20 start with ,but i have enough ground to get up to 90 odd,so want to pick a more commercial breed.
