How late can you grow stubbles, and which variety is best for late sowing? Got a bit of ground that will be available late August and wonder about trying something before it goes back to grass next spring.

End of August for Stubble Turnips

Does that still apply at 700feet and with shorter days? Would kale or rape do a job later? Would be following tatties but they’re very slow this year.

Why not sow grass , be ok until mid September

Just fancy trying something different for an experiment - could maybe finish a lamb or two on it for ourselves . It’s just a tiny corner but fenced off and next to run back & water.

If I can get our spuds of and it's not to wet I will put Westerwolds in , you could put some brasicas in with that , will give me some grass over the winter and spring then I will drill a long term ley into that

Probably too small an area to drill - I’m meaning literally a lamb or two. It’s only the household spud garden, so not even a quarter acre. That’s why I wondered about stubbles.

I DD a bit of stubble turnips after Spring Barley, so usually mid-late September, on ground that is destined for sowing (usually beet) in April/May.
Tbh they don’t come to anything before they start growing again in March, just a bit of ground cover reducing nutrient leaching before then.
That’s at 400’ in mid-Wales.

I would have thought it would be a waste of time with you tbh, especially given the latitude giving shorter winter days and a later Spring.
A proper hard frost for a fortnight would also wipe them out, which I would imagine would be more frequent with you.
