god i'm gonna get some pee ripped :bag: ,,,,but here goes:rolleyes:

given my 'unconventional' sheep farming methods😗...i'm thinking a simple pregnancy detector might be useful....the sort that emit and audible sound not a scanner......does anyone have any experience with them?

feel free to laugh:bag:

They’re a tad expensive 🙈 can’t remember what our local said it costs if the probe is damaged, enough to make you cry. Twice in one day I’m sure he said in the past

I assume the op is asking about a cheapo one, rather than a proper scanner: https://www.draminski.com/agri/pregnancy-detectors/draminski-pregnancy-detector-for-sheep-and-goats/

Less than £300 online.

No idea whether they are any good, but handy being so mobile. @spin cycle could scan one of his ewes in each parish.🤐😂

The Dopler pregnancy scanner detected the arterial flow of blood to the foetus. It didn't allow detection of twins as I recall - it was hard enough hearing the steady ''blood flow'' without trying to listen for more than one.

It was only ever used for experimental purposes - the only time I used it was to detect pregnancy in a flock trying :banghead: to lamb ''three times in two years''.

I see the SAC farms at Dumfries and Barony are trying ''three times in two years''- I could advise them not to waste their time. They are also trying Highlanders, which is even more ridiculous.

Perfectly feasible on an experimental farm , or one where nutrition is top knotch + lambs crept and weaning dates are spot on , to many variables on most farms to do it for long ,

But an experimental farm rarely does anything as well a a top notch commercial farm. In fact, since time began, advisors and demonstration farms have taken their advice from commercial farmers, rather than the opposite.

If you disagree, give me a frinstance. Or as my self-employed shepherd used to say, ''give me a pacific example''.

@spin cycle just forget all that ultra sound/ dopler/ hanging a nail on a wire / blah, blah, blah smoke and mirrors type guff explained in posts above......

.....all you need is a teaser tup. Put a raddle harness on him and let him go.

Everything he marks is NOT in lamb.

There's far too much 'over thinking' and 'over complicating' goes on on this forum.
Come on guys (and gals) let's get back to basics, break out the smocks and dogs and sticks, start chewing on bits of grass again and dump all the modern expensive technology.

But just like you at the village dance, a teaser will jump anything until he settles down.

Would it have to be a Dorset teaser, so that he’d still be keen on working at times to match @spin cycle ’s ewes?
