Sheep profits??

I know proper sheep farmers have a diesel gator (or so it would appear!)but can’t quite stretch to one of them here!
With such long arms? Proper farm users would recommend a Diesel Kubota. Gearing is good for all types of terrain. However, I use a Polaris Ranger 900 with electronic power steering. It is easier for the dogs to operate. They tell me that it will go 70 MPH. If I am going 20 MPH I would say that I am going fast.

some years they put out 100's of K's and make nothing

Like nearly every farmer on here............. and for that matter every business. Life is a gamble.

Store lamb buyers have done well out of the job for the last few years. It is just needs floating down to the mad ones that do all the hard working of lambing etc. Hopefully it will this year.

I have no grudge they are doing well out of taking the risk. Buying store lambs last Autumn looked a brave move with the Brexit uncertainlty...........especially if you listened to the doom monger Brexiteers.

Lets hope that these prices are going to be the norm now. They will need to be at this level once the SFP goes.

My farming history reads like a “ How to cock it up” guide.... but due to circumstances ( LL based) I cut cattle back and doubled ewes last year...... this can only mean one thing ...... the biggest crash in sheep values in history just around the corner.
Also gave up cereals and grassed down..... don’t miss the risk and costs that entailed...... eggs in one basket ( not quite) contractor making awesome job of sheep...passive income ( small). 60 next birthday 🎂

long my this sheep price last 🙏

Don't expect the price to stay where it is, as long as your ok on a five year ave then that's fine

Well, decent stores have seemed strong money all the way through, so it was a leap of faith to buy them.
I reckon the crappers that look nothing all year until nearly their birthday are where the money is, sold our last few Tuesday quite advantageously. Perhaps bottom feeding at the store sales is the way forward..

So Gentlemen/Ladies, what are all the huge profits (income anyway) from the buoyant sheep trade recently going to be "invested" in?

More sheep
Sheds
Outdoor flock conversion (more sheep)
Tractor/Handlers
More sheep

New kitchen?
Not seen a massive difference in lamb prices as sell over the summer autumn mostly, but £14 head more than last year is very welcome
Thinking of Doubling the size of the lambing shed though ,put up a 50ft x 144ft adjoining the present one that went up in 2018

Always has been , same with cattle , when you breed you want to breed they very best when you buy stores you want the poor ones but not tots crap.

Speaking to a friend yesterday and we were just saying that one or two of these big finishers will be making that much money it’s another farm they will need to buy to offset tax this year . Good on them though ,I’m not criticising they had the nerve to go out and buy them and they deserve the reward.
As long as they stick their hand up more readily and pull less faces in the backend...

Yeah I don’t get it either, I know it’s to do with supply and demand but when the best/healthiest lambs are gone by 10-16 weeks with most people the lambs make £70-90. The ones with erysipelas, joint ill, continued lameness, scab, gastroenteritis etc etc are the ones making big money now! This is a total generalisation but it’s the only lambs I see near me after February, couple hundred next door at the moment that need a .22 to sort them out 🤦🏻‍♂️

Agree......AHDB have been telling us to improve our growth rates, but it is all the slow growing runts that make the big bucks
