Even if they will give you percentage of each ingredient there's quite a big tolerance to work with.
Remember suppliers are allowed a 10% margin from their stated figures.
I read somewhere that some firms were using Shea nut which is about 6me. Sheep shite is 7They are, and you can be sure that some, likely the ones that see fit to put shite like oatbran in the rations, will be making use of every bit of that margin.
When I was in college we did a blind trial for Bibby's with 16,18 and 20% cakes, Big fat north country ewes with twins. Once they'd lambed the 20% bunch were sinking so much they had gone skin and bone and had to come off it. Bit like the Atkins diet, too much protein starts burning off fat. I'd rather a 16% where the protein is more available like soya than an 18% where it's from rape or wheat feed. One of the best stockmen I know says you do your lambing at Christmas,if they're looking well now it'll go well. If they're looking plain now you're in troubleI`ve always thought that with dairy cake they`ve got to get it right or the milk yield tells a story very quickly, but with ewe concentrates some of them think any old sh*te will do as no one`s any wiser . A lot of years ago (when I was a bit greener!) we had twin lamb disease feeding ewes a national compounder`s best rolls (turned out they`d a 21% P one for ewes on a straw diet). Had never had it before and never had it since. My philosophy with twin bearing swales is that you can`t give them too good a roll when they`re on hill grazing and if they`ve plenty of good grub they want BOTH lambs and milk like there`s no tomorrow.
