Sheep stolen

A friend of mine who took on a tenancy only last year had 40 sheep stolen earlier this week. I feel gutted for him. That is half his flock that he rotates across his arable operation. It is so hard setting up so it is a massive kick in the teeth for a young bloke really having a go.

Is this commonplace at the moment and what are others doing to minimise the chance of sheep getting stolen?

Family encouraged him to set up a crowd funding to try to raise some money to replace the sheep - if anyone is interested in donating, let me know and I will send the link.

I think they were new additions to the flock - not yet updated on the policy.

This was Alison’s response to me… We haven’t had the best of luck in our first 17 months! Drought ruined the arable crops, baler caught fire, livestock trailer was forced off the road into a ditch, livestock worrying by dogs (lost 7 pregnant ewes), and now this! 😢

None of the above.

I do a bit fair bit of motorway trailering. If I roll the trailer with 40 odd lambs on, my truck insurance covers the trailer. Who stands the potentially over £6000 of lambs on board.

On liability, I graze near a few busy roads, if lambs get out and cause an fatal accident. 🤷

Everyone's situation is different obviously, but for me I feel safer with it.

Having 80 ewes on the Fosse Way for 3hrs while I drove back from doing some scanning kind of sealed their fate for me… I sold them soon after that. Thankfully they didn’t cause an accident (they were insured TBF). The stress of having sheep out when you have no control is hard to describe
