The police need to get a grip on this an realise just how much of it is going on, it’s not the odd one for the freezer they are making a job out of it!! And as for just dumping them back in some random field because they didn’t know what to do with them, I think that’s pretty poor! If they took jewellery off a thief would they take it to the nearest shop an say here have this we don’t know what to do with it!!! They need to realise these animals are worth money an not just fluffy field decorations!!!

To be honest I'd be more looking to recover the costs of the biosecurity breakdown from the Police service

Have you any idea what the cost to the taxpayers of the " ten years extra" would be, though?
My solution would involve the thieves fingers, a decent hedge knife and a tree stump. There and then . No messing about, no endless appeals , no anaesthetic , no problem 😊.
My wife wants to do that for littering, start with one joint on the little finger and see how long they take to learn!

while the punishments of yesteryear, were to harsh, but very popular, no doubt, todays punishments are no deterrent, the pendulum has swung to far, lets hope it swings back to 'neutral'.
sex offenders ? removal of ALL the male bits, not sure what you can remove from women, so easily.

No... tell us more please.
I would if I knew the answer. I hoped that out of nearly 50k members on here, someone may know.
Someone mentioned previously that the Police don't seem to realise the monetary value of the stock that are taken. I'd disagree and think that the problem is that the Police DO realise the value, but that farmers are (or should)) be insured against theft. If it's true, re the compromised biosecurity, caused by letting the sheep go into a convenient field with some others, then obviously some more training is required!
At the very least, if the perpetrators are found guilty and to have immigrated here (and without a doubt, the VW Passat is a big clue that this may be the case), then they, along with all dependants should be on the first flight back to where they've come from. Complete with a nicely visible T tattooed on their forehead, so that everyone knows what they're dealing with, when they reappear in a few months time.

Trading standards/ Environmental Health need to get involved, after all as well as theft it is a food safety issue especially if meat is being sold.
dream on, although i agree wholeheartedly with that, they won't, the 'discrimination' card would be played, and they would back off, or they would simply 'run away' back to wherever.

They do in this part of the world but I'm not sure it helps much

You end up with three different departments (none of which really understand how tagging and farming in general works) all pulling in different directions or, more than likely, doing nowt 'cos they think the others are doing it.

Take a few weeks ago for example, Environmental Health are on the phone, they have some sheep remains that look a bit 'wooly', so, it must be one of our Lincolns. "It says Wery on the ear tag."

Now, if I've told them once, I've told them a dozen times, the UK number will tell them who the breeder was, contact them and if they haven't lost it, ask them when they sold the individual number and trace it that way. The problem is, all these agencies have so many staff, you never talk to the same person twice, so the message never sinks in.

Turns out, when I asked them to look properly, 'Wery' was actually 'Wairere', so I was able to tell them it was a Romney and they should ring Wairere UK and ask them who they'd sold that individual number to.

What's easy for us seems tricky to them :(
