Slats need a very level surface on which to rest, otherwise you might as well buy some second hand waltzer cars and open a fun fair.

They are very expensive, need expert installation, are difficult to muck out, and ruin the shed for most other uses.

The cost of the slats would pay for a 50% extension to the existing shed. It would allow stocking rates to be reduced, and we all know that reducing stocking rate allows an even bigger saving in straw requirements for bedding.

And a layer of sawdust (if it's available) under the straw is another saving. And make sure that water doesn't get into the shed and that troughs and water bowls don't leak.
