So a load has to be sheeted, we've had to keep masks to keep people safe yet the likes of this is ok.

And for those of the disposition often caused by living in Northern Ireland, painting it a different colour won't make it any better/worse.

Our local agricultural show wasn't allowed to have give a local open farm a stand because they couldn't provide hot running water (due to HSE hot water regulations), yet it's ok to build a skyscraper out of pallets, and then set it alight.
Impressive to look at, but completely irresponsible
It’s the difference between work and not work, and that’s it. Difficult to legislate against what folks want to do in their spare time, but important to make workplaces safe so as to avoid exploitation of workers.

But yes, seems bonkers on first look.

Rev Preston said it was difficult to see the incident unfold at a bonfire,
"You just don't expect something like this to happen."

Well I do. In fact I am surprised it doesn't happen a great deal.
Condolences to his friends and family all the same.

The Rev is just repeating those rehersed lines that people doing that kind of job tend to without thinking, it makes people feel a bit better.

Terrible to hear of anyone loosing their life, but hanging about around a 50ft stack of pallets is one way to help get you a step closer meeting Elvis.

As a mark of respect they have dismantled the 50 ft bonfire that man fell off. But not to worry they will be taking the pallets up round the corner to Craigyhill to the 180ft+ one that is aiming to break the world record.

I'd better get the sheet looked out to keep things legal
You may need some more air in your rear tyres, plus a good few more front weights, as I’m sure you’ll have more than max weight on your pickup hitch! How many tonnes of gravel in there? Will it actually tip?
Nice to have your own private roads!

To be fair the old maxxum is not the usual pony to draw that cart. Trailer is a one off build (not for me, I bought it second hand). It's a 12t grain body built to dump trailer spec, 10mm floor, 8mm sides, 26t running gear. She's 6.75t empty, be about 23t in it there, it will tip that but not much more. It's quite easy to put a load in it that it won't tip. If the lower hinge points of the tipping rams were another 6 inch lower it would make a big difference for getting it up off the stops. The rams sit too flat to get enough purchase when the body is down - that be my only complaint, other than that a bloody well put together trailer

Surely it is, one good emergency stop and that bale on the front is going to want to perch on top of the cab?
I doubt the brakes on that old trailer will be fit to anchor it hard enough for that to happen. Only way those bales will fall off is if it ends up on its side... Then straps will just slow down the job of getting it righted and re loaded before some do gooder calls it in

Every year I see bales strapped like this, every year I see a few bales on the verge or in a ditch, so how do they get there if you say they can't fall off.

Some people don't know how to build bales on a trailer. You could have all the straps in the world and have the bales hanging all ways like hoor's fanny and it be a lot more unsafe than a properly built load without straps.

Complete rubbish, unless you have a road as flat as a snooker table and drive at a snails pace, unstrapped bales are dangerous. I just cannot work out why farming seemingly attracts people who cannot be arsed to take the slightest measures to be safer. Personally I've only ever lost one item, wheelbarrow off the back of a trailer with sides. Trailer hit bump wind got under barrow and off it flew. Fortunately no one behind me at time. Lesson learnt, everything strapped down thereafter
