I may have to employ a full time shepherd soonish and was wondering what’s the going rate atm.
house with job, needs own good dogs, 6 day week. I think they are usually underpaid?

On the edge of being ok I think. It’s asking a lot of someone to commit 6 days 7 at lambing and give up time with their family.
I often wonder if just enough always ends up being nowhere near
I’m no expert. When my dad was shepherding he always kept 50 ewes of his own in the flock as a bonus. Did didn’t have to pay anything to keep them but wasn’t aloud to go over 50. I meant mum and us kids helped a lot at lambs because we thought we where looking after our holiday money.

It depends on what you expect them do do as well. If they are just shepherd then it’s an easy job in the summer but if you expect them to go corn carting as well then that changes a lot.

I think that would be a good idea 💡, keeps them interested and go the extra mile when they have involvement in the job,
That would bring the overall wage down I bit to on paper, but may look more attractive overall

Mixed in with the rest of the sheep so there are 5/10 ewes in each group. Other wise the shepherd might tend to spend more time on his group.
I think it pays for the over time there expected to do. Mum was also given the pet lambs but had to pay to feed, bed and water them.
