Shingles

Just been diagnosed.
Thought I had pulled a muscle in my back, painful to lean back when sitting, bad to lie in bed. When the pain started to radiate to the front though I had better get it checked out. Also itchy spot over ribs, which I thought was a gnat bit! Dr said classic symptoms. I look after Grandaughter on a regular basis, and there has been a of chicken pots in the crèche, but she has shown no signs.
So, anyone got any tips to deal with what looks like being quite a long haul?
Dr offered neurological drugs, but I don't feel that bad, yet! She suggested making a paste from bicarb to rub on the itchy bits.

I've had it, same symptoms as you. Knocked me about for 2-3 days but that was all.
I know others that have had it and it took an age to get over it but they had it more on their head (and in it, if truth be told)
That's encouraging. Dr said it could last months:eek:
I have been pretty miserable this last few days. Feeling nauseous too.

I learnt recently that you don't get it from children with chicken pox. The virus lies dormant in people after they have had chicken pox and comes out (years) later. Although I know of one child of ten who had it after having CP at a much younger age. Follow your GPs advice as @Kidds said it varies a lot between people, you must go with how it makes you feel, don't push yourself to keep going. I had one colleague who (at 37) wasn't back if full time work for several (if not six) months.

I had it in my early twenties and it was both sides and pretty painful.. think I got amitriptyline for it but it didn't linger long.
I was at the freezing works and think I had a few days off but not many. Hope its the same case with you! My GP said what @GrannyAching said, and when your immune system is busy doing something else it comes and bites.. so nurse yourself.. and don't drink on amitriptyline :):wacky:

Yes she did offer me amitriptyline. I would rather do without if I can. I don't react well to those sort of things, even without drinking.
So perhaps it isn't from my Grand Daughter?
I haven't felt too bad up to today, tired now. Perhaps it's all in the mind, ok till I found out!
I know my Aunt had it years ago and she was really ill, so I thought I was in for it. Sounds as if it probably won't be that bad.
Thanks everyone.

Best of luck with it @Wendy10
Now that you mention it- I did feel really fatigued with it. I thought it was something amiss with my back as I'd not long "recovered" from a spinal injury.. went to the doc and saw the big stripes, I didn't even know they were there! It had come up in no time.
The other thing he said was, it can be really serious if the shingles are both sides and meet in the middle (I had about 3 finger widths to go) so just be aware of that bit.
Nasty..
Wish you a speedy recovery.

You can not get shingles from someone with shingles or with chickenpox.

But you can get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before, and it is contagious while the blisters are at the oozing stage.

If at any time you start to feel very unwell, please see a GP straight away, I didnt, to my cost.
Both shingles and chickenpox can be very serious in people from their 30s onwards.

I really feel for you especially in this heat @Wendy10 if the pain or itching gets unbearable pain killers and cold compress or a cool shower helps greatly.

Thanks @llamedos Only got it on one side. The Dr mentioned that only someone who hasn't had CP could catch it from me if they actually touched the rash. Not really likely where it is!
Not helped tonight by some young hero piling into me as I was going home from taking the men a picnic on the clamp. 3 of them in the car shouting and swearing at me that I was speeding!!! I had my 6 year old Grand Daughter in the back and I was going up a hill in the pick up, just off a junction, and I am past speeding! She is ok, but cross that the boys lied!
He only passed his test today and was lying through his teeth to save a telling off from Mammy! And his mates backed him up. Knock for Knock anyway. Just really shaken me.

There really are some idiots about. Hope you recover swiftly form both afflictions!

Mother and father in law had a vaccine last year for shingles. It is available on the NHS I believe but not beyond 70 or 75 I think as it's not very effective as you age so they paid for it privately.

I had it when I was 30 in my right sciatic nerve. Nasty burning pain from buttock to calf and tiredness, Seem to remember I was given antiviral tablets and Volterol cream. Trouble was I went off on holiday a couple of days later to Scotland and it was very sunny and I ended up with a really nasty itchy rash on my back, Turned out I react to diclofenac which is in volterol. It only took my shingles a few weeks to clear up and luckily I haven't had any flare-ups since but I know for some others it can be very nasty.

Thanks all. I have always been a strong lass so I'm sure it won't take me long to bounce back. Just need a good sleep tonight to make everything seem better. Now where did I put the paracetamol and Brufen?

Hope you are feeling better soon.
Calamine lotion helps, and something cool and non fluffy clothing wise. Even something like a cotton pillowcase, not flannelette.

Apply the police to the little sh1ts in the car.

Thanks @Alicecow . Sleeping is the worst, painful lying down. The itching isn't over bad, at least not yet. All the rash has merged into one big area now, so perhaps it's on the wane. Not too big an area and the front and back haven't joined up.
Police were involved. Not interested! I just hope the little scrote claims his damage on the insurance, he won't be able to afford to drive next year!!! And my insurance may take him on as I was stationary when he hit me.

Hope you feel better soon. My shingles was only for about 10 days and slept through most of it. Could barely keep awake... If I get run down I get of neuralgia/tingling where I had the blisters come out of back but otherwise no long lasting effect.

If they offer antiviral I would take them as I think shortened illness..

Scrotes are annoying too, so hope you shake that off soon also!

Thanks. Speaking to different people I don't think I have it very bad. Also, they are saying they are having it more than once! The Dr wouldn't give me antiviral as the rash had been there too long for it to work. If it comes back I will be straight over there!
As for the other, my insurance are taking them on as I was stationary, not sure how far they will get with it, but at least his insurance will be aware that he has had a bump, which will reflect in his premiums. As I used to tell my offspring when they were young, actions have consequences:)

Ok. Were you all being kind or am I being a wuss? No one mentioned how painful this can become. Wow. I think the only pain that has come close to this is Trigeminal Neuralgia.
I'm off to the Doc this morning to get some Amitryptolin. (spelling?)

No you aren't being a wuss - looking back I can see no one really talked about the pain but it's definitely part of having a "good dose" of shingles.

I mentioned the pain, yes it's nasty. I have taken amityriptiline for other nerve pain and it meant the difference between no sleep and 8 hrs sleep, even at the lowest dose, bliss.
