I took a couple of pics today of the rolled field. I'm really pleased with how smooth and level the discs have left it.

The only thing they don't do very well is level the soil. If there's a hole before you go over it, it'll still be there after you've gone over it. They need a levelling bar or paddles behind the discs and before the packer but i don't think any of them have one.

What are the benefits of these disc type machines over say a power harrow?

I would say from use of both machines, using discs seem to use less fuel per acre and quicker ( depending on size of unit/tractor etc) i.e using discs on weekend did 60 acre of compacted land with a 200hp tractor averaged 8 acres per hour and used 165 litres of fuel. In my eyes Some crops you need a fine seed bed but for others you don’t, power harrowing has its place but found the discs have been very good for putting grass leys, osr and fodder crops in with minimal soil structure damage and cost affective.

A multi disc without leveling paddles is like a 3 legged horse....

Just not quite the full package.

It does depend on the ground you work though, we are still doing a lot of development work so for us it’s more important.

Been to look at a second hand Rolex last week. 5 meter trailed. What are the issues I should be looking out for. This one is two years old. But done very little as the manager has changed to contractors.

Thinking of mounting a grass seeder on the back of a set of short discs. If I don’t have a levelling Harrow would you drop the seed in front or behind the packer?
