Short of grass

Good for grass here despite slow start.
Somewhat helped by the fact that we saved a lot of silage and straw by taking advantage of the dry spring for early turnout so we didn't have to cut as much silage making grazing abundant.

Grass and spring sown barley would have benefited if May and August had swapped around, but that's the game were in.

Feeding abit here for two months but will shortly be stopping as grass has shot up . Calves will start on creep next month so cows can live abit harder then. I probably turned out too early and stock got on top of the grass during the cold spell which then turned into a drought. Stock have been miserable but they have done well.

My ewes are short of grass... but only because they refuse to respect fences in the paddocks that have grass :banghead: 🔫🔫 They may be staying in prison field until both the neighbours and ourselves have combined... which may be a while 🌧🌧🌧

Grass growing well again here following 2” rain in the last week. Spoke to someone who been to Kent where they had only had 10minutes of rain in the last week!

Feeding here, getting rather wet, slowing growth and short wet grass isn't filling them. A repeat of last year..... But we have finished making silage thank goodness unlike last year.

I’ve been feeding cake and hay to our cows since early July. We must have had around half an inch on Wednesday and that’s the most we’ve had since April. The fields have greened up but still desperate for grass.

Grass?? What grass, just keep watching rain go around us! Feeding cows and creeping calves which is not really the idea of having a native breed that thrives off grass🙄
Think we had about three weeks of grass after the April may heat wave an then burnt straight off again, we are very light land though so it’s not a surprise but it’s a bit of a challenge and extra cost that we can do with out! The wetter the year the better for us, worst year for growing kale turnips here for us as well which doesn’t bode well for the winter either 🙈

been feeding silage to the sucklers since the beginning of the month, cold july rain just turned the ground to mud and even though the weather has warmed up a bit this month, the grass is too poached to feed the full herd now. heavy rain back again, so it looks like summer lasted a whole 6 days last week
