Shortage of good staff

Thread needs to be retitled "Shortage of people willing to work stupid hours in a dead end job, for for a few pennies more than minimum wage, with a boss that thinks you should be grateful for anything you get and who longs for a return to Victorian times as the Workhouse sorted out the shirkers"
so you say a dead end job

and what what puts a crust on your table

We tried Facebook a few yrs ago ,only to find they would ring up to make contact then all by text to show the dole office they were looking for work. Then wouldnt turn up for interview Tw2ts !
I have had this in the past where they have turned up for interview but with no intention of taking the job just so they can keep drawing job seekers allowance.

I know of a place where they need staff ,last applicant came from an up to date farm 2 yr old max machinery ,,took one look at and found nothing was under 5 yrs old and some of it was older than Noah.

why the move
shiny kit syndrome , not all it’s cracked up to be

I can't think of anything that would kill my enthusiasm than turning up to a place and having to fix or fudge virtually everything before you could use it. I'm happy to maintain and work with equipment that is up together, but the days of dragging stuff out of the nettles and taking it on the road or working with guards missing, bits clearly fudged etc are long gone.

It doesn't have to be under 2 year old to be well maintained.
Indeed, seen farms where kit under 2 year old looks horrendous.

Country's heading to hell in a cart if no one wants to do the low paid manual work.
As for not wanting to drive tractors older than 2 years. :X3: I suppose the Ford 4000 is out of the question then......
No one wants to do the high paid jobs like dentistry either.:X3:
I despair, I really do........

Who the heck wants to fudge about with old folks teeth? Must be something wrong with people who want to do that.

Not condoning it, just saying it as I see it. Wages countrywide in too many industries are too low but that's what unprecedented inflation does for you.
The current high inflation is relatively recent, low agricultural wages and the associated crap working conditions have been around for decades. The only reason most people take agri jobs is because they enjoy at least some aspects of it.

Dead end jobs-no real chances of improving your position or job satisfaction without moving on.

How do you answer the "where do you see yourself in 5 years time?" question if you're applying for a herdsman job.
"Working somewhere else" might not make a good impression.

I've been both an employer and an employee in farming and outside farming. Good employers don't have trouble recruiting staff, mainly because staff don't leave.

Currently working in the transport industry with a firm where 90% of the staff have 20+ years service-3 have over 50 years each!

I like driving the older stuff, it has to be in working order though, happy to sit in a 7610 all day, as long as everything works. If it has a cab but no AC I'd prefer it if the cab was chopped off(y)
