Shorthorns?

Lovely looking cows, credit to you!
We did a one off milk recording last summer and she was 4.97bf 3.63p and 17 scc as a heifer on cake and grass. Once I start properly recording next month and she calves again be able to get a better idea of her yield and average quality. Her sister year before by same bull, as I got 2 straws of sexed wildcard and the cow held first time as a heifer and then as a first calver, is a bit narrow for me but she has a nice udder like this one. Using higher purity bulls to try and breed them around the 75 to 80% mark. Heifer to calve this year will be 80% pure and calving at just under 2, although she didn’t go out last summer due to lack of grass and water in some fields so silaged them instead. As well as some sexed bradash patriot maybe this summer to breed some red and white Friesian cross heifers.

Would be interested to see how she progresses, nice figures coming out of her.

Definitely interested in the breed, so will try and track down some stock.

They don’t show the bull percentages on the AI catalogues any more so might be worth enquiring about what percentage shorthorn they are, Shorthorn Sires UK have a good selection

What have modern Shorthorns been crossed with, Ayrshire? Dont resemble the cows, shape and colour, that i remember from my childhood days.
Red and white Holstein, Ayrshire, MRI, Illawarra, Swedish red. Basically anything red and white😂

they are not shorthorns really then are they?
There are animals of high purity, I mean there are a lot of friesians that are 90% that 3 gens back we’re Holstein. But some of the shorthorns which are only 20, 30% pure are not shorthorns to me.

That can of worms is best left with the lid on ;)
What breed doesn't have other Influence's
There are still shorthorns out there with no or very little outside breeds
I`m old enough to remember when DS were on the edge of the precipice.
I`m quite sure that if the scheme to introduce new genetics had not been started in the 70`s then the breed would have been in the same state as NDS now.
The world moves on & pragmatism has to prevail over idealism. IMO

Thats ok as long as the breed keeps its own strengths and does not just become a R&W mottled Holstein

Easy to say that now but we will never know.
As my previous post says the breed has a cow for every situation and everyone can keep what suits them, but there was nothing wrong with the percentage system and IMO variations of purity should be recognised within the breed.
Also if the society had not aloud progeny from a certain bull imported from Australia to be classed as 100% Then we would have a herd of fully 100% pure cows instead of the 100% it states on pedigrees which is slightly incorrect owing to said bull

I used to run about 30% Shorthorns with my Jerseys, until the milk buyer decided to insist that we went all Jersey, or left. On a mainly grazed system, I'd say that i had my best years milking when sending approximately half and half the milk from each breed. Volume from the Shorthorns and quality from the Jerseys. I couldn't get on with the pure Shorthorns though, they weren't good enough on udder conformation, temperament or yield for me. I think around the three quarter Shorthorn, one quarter Holstein was best. As far as the NDS are concerned, my Jerseys gave way more milk. As far as longevity is concerned, they stand need to last a long time when they're doing 3500kg in 305 days!

Sons girlfriend keeps them. She posted this yesterday. She 5th calver due again in November
I did wind her up yesterday when she posted this that there must be some Fleckvieh in there somewhere being that substantial.
I think she saw the funny side 😆.
Tobarn dairy shorthorns on Facebook.

Nice cow.
My oldest daughter has a few show type Ayrshires and I keep threatening to serve them to Montbeliarde to toughen them up a bit. She doesn't find it funny strangely.
The other daughter wants a shorthorn to show once the shows start again, I'm very interested in the breed so I guess I'll be looking for one.
