Shotbolt or end tow rolls

Anybody any experience of these? Seem cheaper than hyd folding ones but likely to be heavier and contour following? ie each roll pivots centrally? When I've used some crappy hyd folding ones that aren't contour following the wings flap up and down like a demented crow on rough land which is not good.

Dont do it, yes you are right marvellous in the field but you soon get sick of folding and unfolding drawbars to end tow through a gap in the hedge to go from one field to another even if you put the drawbars on rams to save lifting them, and they aren't the handiest down the road being so long on a single axle.

Thanks. I am prepared to sacrifice easy foldings for saving cash and good field performance. I hate sh!t rolling, so many people seem not to care enough about this important job!

So get a set of folding rolls that spread the pressure over the width. How wide?

How much are the shotbolt type in comparison then? Walter Watson rolls aren't that expensive and are built very heavy, and with the small addition of a pilot operated check valve spread the weight evenly and the gangs pivot in the middle.

I couldn't bring myself to pay for a set of heva's, at nearly 50% more than the watson's.

6m. Can't really afford/justify as you describe so as said prepared to put up with pain between fields for good work in them!

As a new member I have only just come upon this thread,so allow me the indulgence of getting my experience off my chest. About 35yrs ago,I worked on a (then) medium sized farm in the Heart of England which was made up of parcels of land scattered around the locality. The farm had a knackered set of gang rolls which were up for replacement and we-the staff, were quite keen on the fairly new concept of folding, transportable rolls - a 6m set would have gone behind any of our tractors. The Farm Manager announced that he had it sorted and a 12m set of Shotbolt Rolls arrived (bright yellow!). The only tractor they could go behind was our recently acquired " Big Tractor" - a MF 1200 (another "inspired" buy) and it gave it a strange feeling as " the tail wagged the dog ". The length meant you could only access some fields by reversing in and out with the attendant traffic implications and the first field I had to roll was 7 acres with 7 trees in it !!. Thankfully it was moved on,replaced by a 6m set of Vaderstad rolls. I can laugh at it now - but then........

Shotbolts to be fair follow contours as well as any rollers but untill you have used a set you don't realise how numb and awkward they are to move about and folding and unfolding the drawbars is a sod

Our old 12m shotbolts put weight of frame on end 2 rollers and middle gangs were suspended so only had own weight on them if that makes sense ie more pressure on outside rolls
