I doubt if anyone is going to say that any aspect of slavery was a good thing, the Africans selling their own people. others buying them etc. etc.. But the current mob actions and now the statement from the idiot Sadiq Khan saying, basically, that London's statues reflect British history too much and not London's current 'diversity', really is taking the p!ss.

Many may have or soon will reach the point of thinking mass immigration to this country a bad thing for the native population.

There is now even a petition In Shrewsbury, signed by 2500 people to have a statue of Clive of India removed.
How far do they want to go?, shall we remove any reference to the Romans for instance .
It would seem that they want all white people to make grovelling apologies for things none of us have done, delete a great deal of our national history, pay them large amounts of compensation - for wrongs none of them have suffered - and to ignore anything wrong they or their forebears have ever done. That for a start...

It's crazy.
When will these idiots realise that everything was relative to the 'thinking' at the moment in time that it occured.

Things move on and thinking (quite rightly so, in a lot of cases, changes) but there's no reason to wear sack cloth and ashes over actions that were petfectly legal in the past. They need to get over it and move on too.

In recent history, Germany was run by a bu66er who commited heinous crimes but is it a reason to boycott them now? I don't think so.

It's a pity the bu66ers haven't something better to do.

Been thinking the same myself. You can’t re write history just because a newer generation don’t like it. Much of the UK and other colonial countries were probably built on “dodgy” practices hundreds of years ago. I think the protesters are short sighted and rather ironic really.

Yep, it's all b*llocks, neither I nor any other white person I know or - I think - have ever met has ever enslaved a black person, although some Afrikaners I knew of in the RSA were close to it. I have, however, come across a fair number of black Africans who have effectively done so, a few Asian Africans and ahell of a lot of Arabs.

On that last point, a large number of Africans are still sold to the Middle East every year; a continuation of the East African Slave Trade of old which, it may interest some to know, was 50% larger than the Atlantic Slave Trade and, like it, was put to and end by the British Empire. (The only empire in history to end slavery :))

So anything that happened before today should be deleted?

Don't you learn from your mistakes?

Undertakers bury doctors mistakes?

Anyone who was in service for the Gentry was basically a slave as they lived by the rules of the house, lived in the house and ate in the house.

I was quite annoyed listening to radio 1 news yesterday that Bristol Police main man stood by his decision not to intervene with the vandalism.
I wasn’t aware that the police had the power to make decisions on which laws they agree with policing and which ones they don’t.
A massive turning point in the wrong direction for this country.
In my opinion

Of course they do, not everyone stopped by the police gets a speeding fine. All police are allowed a degree of flexibility.

Of course a lot of wrongs where done , but that was the times those people lived in , not very nice I know, and hopefully confined to the history books forever, it's great and noble saying it was wrong, but still having statues to venerate these people , Is that not wrong, I wouldn't think there's not to many statutes of Adolf Hitler knocking about ,

If I was the Police Commissioner for Bristol that man would have had his P45 by now. An absolute disgrace to his uniform.

I wonder how many of these protesters live in either houses or streets that were either directly or indirectly funded and built on what they want to eradicate. Would they be so willing to smash their own properties with their like minded friends? To finally rid any and all monuments of a piece of history. Populations learn from their mistakes these slave traders would have been upstanding citizens in their towns and devoted church goers already shown by funding almshouses. What they did was wrong but we can all appreciate that and remember when we look at these statues. I cannot think of any living person that would use the statue to worship what the man did so by denying us all our heritage be it a right or wrong one are these protesters any better than dictating what we should see? Seems a pointless exercise to hide a poignant reminder in a canal when their mission is educating. Just my daily rambles/ point of view
