Should I be paying?

Faulty ECU on John Deere telescopic which was sent away to be repaired by dealership.
No charge for the repair, which was by a French company, as it had only been done a few months ago by the same firm.
£340 bill from dealership for travelling out 10 miles fitting their spare to keep me going, coming back and refitting then loading software.
Should they be charging me anything, as the original repair was faulty?

No, because you are entitled to be put into the position in which you would be had the original part not failed.

If dealer persists, explain that you have to pass the claimed costs onto the supplier of the failed part. (Who may, of course, be the same dealer; or may not - the principle is the same).

Then explain the meaning of 'principle'...

How old is the handler and was it in warranty when if failed the first time if the reason for the ecu going is a fault on the handler and it was in warranty the fault should have been fixed when the ecu went the first time under warranty
However if its a well out of warranty and the ecu was damaged due to some fault on the handler then I'd say your getting a good deal its hard to say why it went though.

Since JD stopped making telehandlers a long time ago when they finally gave up on what was left of Matbro I doubt it's under original warranty....

The machine is 2005, so it wasn't a warranty claim on the loader.
The ECU failed in the summer and was sent away to be repaired by the dealer, which cost me over a grand.
It then failed late October, the engine stopped dead when half way through loading a grain lorry and at full height with a bucket of wheat, not as that's relevant .
Dealer came out and sent it back to the electronics company in France it uses for these things, saying it was under warranty from the French guys , as it had failed so soon .
My question is , should I have to pay the dealer for coming out and refitting something that they sent off as part of the original breakdown.

Put it this way, if you'd employed a third party engineer to remove the ECU and sent it back to the manufacturer yourself, and then got the same engineer to refit it, would you expect him to do the work for free? If not, why should the dealer? Its not under warranty by a long chalk.

Its an 8+ year old machine. You can't expect the dealer to pay for the costs of removing and fitting spare parts on it. Thats down to you I'm afraid. If the ECU makers are coughing up for a new ECU, count yourself lucky, especially if as others have pointed out its entirely possible the ECU failed so quickly the second time because of some other pre-existing fault on an out of warranty machine.

I don't disagree with what you saying and can see your point. I do get fed up with the charges dealers make, and this lot in particular seem expensive. Thank goodness i only run one green machine.
I guess they rub me up the wrong way, having come out when the joystick was playing up, deciding it might have been the seat sensor, disconnecting it to try it out,[ten minute job], then sending a bill for that with 1.5hrs labour, plus traveling time.
in the end i took the joystick off, drove to an electronics firm in warwickshire, who mended it and posted it back for a fraction of what the main dealer would have charged.
They also charged £280 to do a sprayer test on the sprayer i bought new from them, which looked like the day i bought it, which i thought was a bit expensive. I suppose it's like car dealerships, the more shiny expensive kit you sell, the more you can charge to service the stuff.
Thank goodness for my local mechanic, who does most things for me.
Feeling a bit ratty today, as only got 2hrs sleep yesterday due to my dad taken ill in the early hours and going with him in the ambulance.Thankfully he's home now.He was getting chest pains, and had a heart attack 2yrs ago , but an angina attack this time.
