I am thinking of selling my FE35 and getting a DB995
I Have a budget of £5K and wondered what I can expect to get for that kind of money and what problems should I look for.

5k is more than enough to get you a good one but it will take some finding
Rusty cabs would be my biggest concern, if you do find one throw the matting out of the cab as they are usually like a wet sponge

£5k will buy a good one. I would try and avoid the Q cabs. The early ones access was terrible if you are anything but a midget. They all suffer interminable wiring issues.
The main serious issue is the hydraulics. DB hydraulics were the best on the market, however they did not like dirty oil! Particularly the fitting of push fit connectors with their inherent liability to get contamiination caused owners endless issues, and made worse by few people understanding them. They can be put right, but I would sooner not go there.
Front axle trunion pins and bearings can be an issue particularly if a loader is fitted.
Engine and gearbox , were pretty sound normally.
On non power steering models check the steering box on top of the gearbox cover, they could suffer cracking and bolts ripping out.
Check for leaks on the rear wheel hubs, this indicates bearing issues here, but they are not a massive issue.
The gear levers should be positive in action, some get very sloppy in the linkage after wear, which can result in the lever dropping out of the selector, easily sorted with a screw driver, but frustrating if it happens often.
On non cabbed tractors there is a very good chance the gear box oil is the colour and consistency of double cream. This is the result of waterentering through the rubber boots on the gear levers.
This can also of course cause hydraulic issues as the oil will not go through the intake filter at the bottom of the gear box.
If you are unfamiliar with DB’s I would try and take some one with you , who knows them.
This may look a large anount of issues , but remember these tractors are 40 odd years old many will have no faults.
We ran dozens of these tractors over the years with very few real issues, but you do see some which have had some amazing bodges rather than trying to sort hydraulic issues
Good luck

Thanks for all the advice.
I am not averse to going open station if the right tractor presents itself.
Mechanically I would like to get as sound model as possible though I am not unaccustomed to getting on the spanners having spent a good part of my life as an HGV fitter.

There is a wealth of technical advice on these tractors on the DBTC club forum, but be aware one of the most experienced posters is Finnish and he is not diplomatic. In his posting!
I think the pinnacle of these tractors were the old four post safety cab with the square mudguards. I believe nearly all parts are available

Don't know what exfarmer calls a midget but I,m 6ft and no stick insect, I run 995/6 with both wide and narrow door q cabs and never had any problem
If you don't want a q cab I wouldn't bother having a cab at all
If you've worked on HGV s just use your mechanical knowledge and you'll be ok
