My 1690 Turbo, awaiting full restoration. Not sure I am ever going to get to it [emoji6][emoji19][emoji19]

How did it get in that condition? What’s its history?

I don’t know a great deal about it. I bought it from a guy in Wales maybe six years ago. He had left it standing outside for years having given up the tenancy of a farm and an associated small contracting business. The bonnet was straight and nose cone was intact at the time, this got damaged in transit. [emoji19][emoji19][emoji19]. It was sold to me as a runner, although I’ve not seen it running ... a replacement cab, bonnet and tyres would immediately have it looking very different and that was my plan .... once I’d checked out the mechanics a bit of course.

Here's something i've been working on for a while...

For the most part is a very early 1966 990, which looked the part, but had been mechanically roughed up a bit.

I had acquired a 990 with a three stick, 12 speed gearbox many years ago, and it sat in the back of the shed until last year.

Various other bits and bobs grafted on, and we ended up with this...

Since taking these pictures, the front axle is sorted, so the steering is back to how it should be, and the width has been reset so I can put it on a plough.

As i said, a bit of everything, a early 990, with a 12 speed gearbox, narrow, higher front wheels (from a set of rowcrop axles i had a while ago. Power Assisted steering. Exhaust Brake. Genuine DB roll bar with the aftermarket wings, double acting spool valve, I've got a bonnet guard for it to go on, all i need now is a set of L shaped weights for it. Tyres too, it needs a set of back tyres.

I had a bit of fun with the rear crank seal leaking, but with the help of a very knowlageable time served DB expert, that seems to have been sorted.

Looking forward for the weather to get it in the field. :)

It's an early engine, it's in the right place for this one.

It's the same engine as was fitted in the red 990. They moved over to the 4/47 later on, which became the basis for all 990 / 995 / 996 etc engines.

Some knowledgeable folk will argue that this is a better engine, I dont know why, but it certainly has it's own distinctive note. :)

How do you stop the front axles from seizing up in the shafts?

Cant think of the right word....senility creeping in. The drop shafts......they have a grease nipple on,but you can never get any grease in.Then its almost impossible to turn the steering wheel.

Oh! I see! the stub axles! :)

The book says that you should fill your grease gun with 140 gear oil rather than grease...

What I try to do is pump a bit of grease in, then jack the axle off the ground and pump a bit more 9/10 times it will go downwards to where it is really needed.

IF you cant get any grease in at all... you could strip it down, or if your lucky, take the nipple off, clean it, and shove a hot wire in the hole to see if you can get something shifted.
