Sick bull

Our bull has stopped eating and is making a low grunting noise with every breath, started 2 days ago but yesterday seemed better but worse now. Will be phoning the vet shortly, just wondering if you have any ideas? My father is thinking a wire. Been no change in his diet so ruling out acidosis. Many thanks

Our bull stopped eating a couple of years ago, bright as a button. Vet gave him a full going over couldn’t find anything wrong. He died 2 days later so vet came foc to do a post Mortum as it had him stumped. He had a huge growth Inside his stomach that had grown around his intestines.
Another chap not that far away lost his bull a couple of months ago and it had eaten a lump of bale wrap that had blocked him up.

Ours is off colour eating a bit but not grunting like yours. Vet came and gave him a steroid he's a little perkier. Hoping it's not something internal as I don't fancy forking out another 3k for a new one this year.

I fed dogs on raw beef tripe for many years. Finding pieces of wire in it was not unusual. Didn't Tristan demonstrate the use of an ex MOD mine detector for locating wire in a cow in "All Creatures Great and Small"? Maybe there's a use for metal detectorists after all? :)

Yes of course it's best to have him alive, but 1 jag can have them redundant for quite a few weeks.

I'd be testing him pre bulling just in case.

He's not due to go in with cows for another 7 or 8 weeks. Will see what vet thinks when I give an update on Monday. He was in with 6 heifers in an outside yard at end of shed. Was very happy to go in with them about 6 weeks ago, but has gone right of it in the last week. Still not eating a great deal, but showing no other signs of disease, no temp, no cough, not blowing or puffing. Just very quiet and off feed, plus lost a bit of flesh. Maybe should of had vet sooner but busy lambing and other jobs too. Add to the neverending shite of the last 12 months if we have to cull him/lose him as he's given some real nice calves this year.
