Any ideas of how to get press rings off the shaft. Tried leaving them in a stream over night hoping it would soften the dust that has got between the rings and shaft that has caused the rings to be so tight on the shaft. Tried all day with no success.

Try heat on the rings or other wise sadly the only thing you can do is cut up the axle and then use a press to push the axle pieces out of the rings so you can reuse them on a new axle.

The put them in the river story is a myth that has never worked but sounded a good tale.

Sorry

I had this problem a couple of years ago.soaked in oil but to no avail.lifted shaft up so one end in the air and get a pressure washer and keep blasting between axle and rings.managed. To get all 20 rings of like this.took a bit of time though

I rested each end of the axle on a stand so I could rotate them, then gentle heat of ring hub so as not to crack it. Dries the dust as well as expanding the hub. Then try rotating the disc on the shaft tiny bit back and forth, sometimes they can bounce back and forth a tiny bit with the torsional springiness of the axle/spokes just enough to start loosening. Squirt a bit of diesel on at this stage. Mind the usual H & S stuff.

Ironic thing was once loosened off the gap was too big and I had to renew axles.
