So we have come to that time of year again.. Grass is looking pretty grim.. Our pit will defo not be full this year ... So what's everybody thinking of doing if they are going to be short ?

I was thinking brewers grain .. But carnt book any for love nor money... So I am now already securing bales from local contractors and farmers...

The post asked what will everybody do if their pit is short this year

I am not writing the season off .. But we will be short and I was hoping to get constructive comments from people who will be in the same boat

A farmer may use a supplier who has tonne of waste products that they are selling that would be suitable for the job

I was hoping to share thoughts and idears and even contacts

I'm sorry I asked now

Oh Walter the bales are going to be 25.00 off the field at this rate
Forward-bought our usual consignment for 2013/14 earlier this year, at £15.00 per bale off the field.

But we can't get any more on the same terms, so we're speaking with the hay-makers around here, who make hay on spec. It means smaller lots, earlier payment and unpredictable quality - which may turn into silage if it doesn't go well - but it all helps.

This is what the future's gonna look like, isn't it?

We use to crimp for beef, if you fed crimp to milkers you would save on cake and get away with less silage. or maybe whole crop as you say but you need to get enough weight in artic lorries. A lot of arable farms are planting maize I here so that's another option

I am looking into making a pit of alkastraw and using beet to fill the gap. Could u get some Trafford gold. By products normally come more available during the summer so u could clamp it. U cud get a guy growing beet to plant a few extra acres. It's a great way of sparing silage.
