Perfect storm for many reasonsThe tight prices in dairying led to cash flow problems 3 years ago so they halved the summer stock orders leading to much increased winter demand and prices.

Judging by the shape of heavy land in Yorkshire straw is gonna be short, less crops in the ground to start with , weather doing nothing for winter crop at moment apart from drowning it and the likely hood of spring barely being drilled on heavy land to do better than cuckoo corn all point to a realistic tight situation. Weather has a month to dictate the situation.
last time we had a long winter like this 2012/13 I thought straw would be short the next autumn in the end I baled the best crop of spring barley straw I have ever baled in fact it was one of the best crops of any straw I have ever baled and I have chased a few combines in my timeJudging by the shape of heavy land in Yorkshire straw is gonna be short, less crops in the ground to start with , weather doing nothing for winter crop at moment apart from drowning it and the likely hood of spring barely being drilled on heavy land to do better than cuckoo corn all point to a realistic tight situation. this maybe true on some kinder land but heavyland has taken a beating since August 2017 and many didn't get chance to sort the damage from combines and balers before winter . Lot of stock within 20 miles of us and those guys are short already. Prime example is one estate usually part with 700 acre of straw to various homes , that estate has 330 empty unploughed which you can do jack all , can duplicate you too plenty more examples without trying too hard .last time we had a long winter like this 2012/13 I thought straw would be short the next autumn in the end I baled the best crop of spring barley straw I have ever baled in fact it was one of the best crops of any straw I have ever baled and I have chased a few combines in my time

problem is on the downs they should be drilling barley now .if it goes in late and the ground dries out quick it will be a desater again for spring crops
