Well get used to the idea, you'll be paying it eventually. Once one of the fodder sales sticks its head above the parapet and charges it, and the world doesn't end, the rest will follow suit. They'll all be hoping someone else makes the first move, then they can all fall in after them risk free. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if some use the shortage of fodder this year to stick it on, because they know people will have to come to the sales regardless.
Most use straw autions just to advertise it . If auctioneers get to greedy they will shoot their own foot

told today, auctioneers on 5% commission, fine when dairy cows were going for £1500, not so clever when a lot go £5oo or less, same with poorer stores, calf price not to bad for best, but f***g useless for the rest, they guarantee the money. I think a lot of auctions will go this way. they will do the same work now as they were when prices were good, doesn't stop me thinking greedy bu**ers though

Must be getting cheaper to feed straw and concentrates than buy hay or silage .
The wheat straw is lovely quality this year.
I think most people leaving the sale came to that conclusion. The trouble is our locals do not want or need to sell there straw at a tenner a 4 ft round when they gave £90+/acre for the standing straw, they will keep it till nxt year!

our hay at £120 delivered not to bad then,
straw looks good value, how does pouring molassis or similar work?
still got 100 cattle out, as have a lot of farmers, another 2 weeks dry forecast helps the winter on, our kale is still growing. bound to hit the straw price

I put molasses on straw last year to help out with fodder and it was a good thing but they had ad lib fodder beet as well. It was plenty good enough for dry cows.
