Silage / Straw / Hay Price Tracker

Every time you fire the tractor up its costing you money for every minute that its running and the same can be said for any machinery the tractor is working.

Standing at the mart for an hour waiting to see your animals sold may actually make you money if a buyer has a query about your animal/s and you can answer them so he then bids more than he might have done!
More importantly what else you could have got done in that time instead

That’s me being honest on the costs to me, that’s coming from my accountant which I had a heated debate with last year as I thought he was in cloud cuckoo land until he broke everything down for me.

it’s possible different systems/areas will have different costings.

Don't forget thou that some of the cost of muck/slurry spreading needs to be split with the following cut/ grazing and not just to the first cut or the cut of silage that its spread in front of!

Most of the buyers only want to talk after, about how much luck i can spare them. You paint a rosy picture of marts but in reality the main buyers turn up do a quick walk up and down the alleys and then fire up on 3 or 4 accounts. Most of the talkers are onlookers

Just worked out how much our 1st cut round bales costs us. Contractor did most jobs. We put fert on, led back etc. Inc rental value and loss of p&k, it will be around £20 - £22 bale.
Just a question ..... at that cost is it better to use the grass for something else ,cattle or sheep, and buy silage in. I'm hoping mine will be half that cost but perhaps I'm optimistic .

Absolutely...not all costs can be attributed to one crop .

Unless you have 20 bales acre of silage that has no feed value you will be very hard pushed to do it for £10 bale unless you haven't put any fert on.

On the buying front, what happens the year roundbale silage is making £30 bale, wont look such a good idea buying it in then and don't forget the cop costs for round bale silage include haulage costs from field to stack, if you buy in silage you will ( unless you buy from a merchant ) have haulage costs on top of the cost of buying the silage and given you may have to haul it a long way you could soon be paying £5 bale haulage so that silage is costing £35 bale compared to say £20 bale if you grow/ make it yourself!

I’ve got someone wanting to buy some bales off the field. It’ll be second cut new seeds .
What’s it worth per bale if they pay for mowing, baling etc. It’ll be quality stuff all being well.

Even if bought off a merchant transport will be on it
