Silage / Straw / Hay Price Tracker

even if we get a 7 month winter like 12/13 was I can't see it being short and it would have to change quick for that as we had nearly everything in by the start of oct in 12,
straw everywhere as well,
yep we may get a dry summer next year and that would make a difference but unless the beef job has picked up a lot by then I can't see suck cow farmers paying big money for fodder or straw they will cull first a couple have said as much to me
Hate to say this but it’s been too dear last year and now the cattle aren’t there to eat it. At least that’s the case in this area. The phone has never stopped with folks trying to shift feed that has no home. I’m basically trying to look after the folk that looked after me for the last two years

They only wanted the big heavy suckler bred stuff. Hereford x were hard to shift .
yep real quality is still just about holding on but still down on what it was, some lesser sorts are give away to what they were, but you can't blame the buyers the money is not in the job for anyone

I’m thinking the same. I usually keep 70 stores over winter on top of everything else feel like getting shot of a few sooner rather than later
I only keep a few stores these days. Used to have 180 cattle here, but ploughed most of the farm now and only have 12 acres I can’t plough, so only had 26 this summer.

The last three winters here have been pretty hopeless for carrying stores over. We have a fair few cows and followers so could do without keeping them over but you only sell them once as they say. No wonder there’s the numbers of plain cattle turning up in store markets. I often had a row with my father as he just sold everything that could walk in October of every year regardless of what it was worth or looked like and only kept the cows to breed off and younger calves.
I’m beginning to think he was right

what is the fodder situation generally ? We are really short, missed virtually all the rain, maize looks really good, whole crop yielded well, grass growth has been awful, we have ley's that have literally died, others have gone really thin. We grow forage rape for midsummer grazing, this has been really slow to grow, incredibly on some dry banks, both weeds and rape has taken 6 weeks to start germinating, and we have been feeding the cows for 6 weeks, and we are spring calving, we have kept youngstock in all summer, on straw and cake, to save grass for the dairy ! Friends living 2 or 3 miles away have had bumper yields. This winter, we shall have to buy fodder in, and we are reseeding 80 acres, which shouldn't need to be yet.
So, are we an exception to the norm ? Yesterday we had heavy rain showers 1/2 mile away, not here.
luckily the rape for winter feed looks to be growing well.
Pity your so far away .I could let you have some 3rd cut and little more than cost to have it gone

our contractor has had to sell a lot of cattle, to address late payment by his customers, I feel sorry for him, as he has allways worked hard, and due to lack of money, they don't look their best, and are not selling to well, so we are close to a deal on his silage bales. We feel a bit guilty, as he bought most of them, as calves, off us, we have helped him out several times this summer already, but we will be fair on price.
The bit that really pees me off, is , he's 5 miles away from us, and never made so much forage ever, on his farm !!!!!!!!

There will be some huge contractor bills this year waiting to be paid all over the country. This could be one of the worst years ever for getting drawn up!
