Why are they charging VAT
we had a vat inspection, somebody we deal with must have been naughty, very targeted, we were fine, but the inspectors 2 big queries, where was the vat, for hay we sold for bedding, and why didn't we account for the vat, on animal hides we sold. However, she knew loads about charolais cattle, right back to the first importations ! Trouble is, being nosey, who had been naughty.

I thought only produce used for burning carried VAT tag.
well, might catch a few out this year, using hay for bedding, very nice lady though, didn't have a clue about farming, except the charolais ? But very helpful in sorting out a few grey areas in the livery yard, if all inspections were like that, life would be easier, virtual red tractor tomorrow, had a visit 6 months ago, changed milk buyer, so new inspection !

little bales, £4.70 each, for wheat straw, in little bales, doesn't sound to bad for the horsey brigade, till you look at the price per ton, £333 aprox. ouch.
big bales, £98 ton, that isn't to bad, for this year, providing my maths is correct.
it could be either, with 'flat eight'.

Its illegal on the public highway.

Anyone who wants to see a picture on how not to transport round bales and especially very solid 5 ft bales on the public highway ( or indeed around a field/farm lane etc ) should take a look at the Devon and Cornwall facebook page... and read about the tragic outcome of doing the above to a cyclist.
