What roughly would straw need to be in Wales/ Devon etc on farm if you were paying £55 in Essex??

I can't comment on Devon don't know the haulage rate but it confuses me that straw is often dearer there than Pembrokeshire

The UK seems to import loads of stuff in lorries but we produce bugger all for export. So there seems to always be a surplus of foreign lorries desperate to get home.

S0 £85 is about what the trade on farm should be and there isn't any reason to pay anymore at a auction!

Most hauliers don't seem to be able to get a load up from down here, they either run up empty and come back with straw or come down with straw and return empty.

Yea I agree about haulage.

Ref the price, not sure that it will be making £90t for long given todays lacklustre trade ( esp if its an early/dry spring )

I will say that the money made out of selling straw loads to farmers is next to nothing. It reminds me of farm contracting .everyone wants to do it so competion is strong .

Well the dealer makes a profit as do the hauliers and the suppling farmers. To the first two its a volume thing.

Given there is no demand for hay this year then perhaps more of us should be doing that even if you bed with hay one day and straw the next day.

When you mix it with straw then it isn't so bad ( especially as days get longer etc )

I agree thou that straw is better but when you can buy a tonne of hay for £30t or a tonne of straw for £90+t its not so clear cut!
