Prices at the sale today well down ain't worth selling at some prices today best put the choppers in, ww some sub £40 s barley some sub £30 an acre at those prices you are just watching your money go up the road as well as organic matter.
In my book anything sub £50-60 an acre ain't worth the hassle choppers in.
I would be happy to pay £50 every year but then the arable boys see the £ signs when we have a year like last year and get greedy so this year i will try to get my own back and level the playing field

Large standing straw tonight ( Somerset )

Very hard to follow trade,

A couple of farms WW made anything from £80/110 acre.

The rest generally £32/ 45 acre with some around the £65 mark.

OSR a hell of a trade and some of it making £40/48 acre!

Winter barley, same comments as the Wheat, odd lot £100+ acre but some lots down around the £40 and upto around the £70 acre mark!

Few sales i have had reports from so far, wheat upto £80/acre at one sale but averaged about £60 and at another wheat averaged £55/acre. Rape £20/ acre and ryegrass about £50/acre. Prices usually drop as the sales go on.

16 acres of grass. Drilled last backend and just mown. Lovely thick lush crop which will make great hay. Located near Worksop just off the A57.

Pm to discuss price and square or rounds.

Acre or ton? whats a fair price for barley straw in the swath per ton this year?

I do mine by the tonne. It seems fairer in dry years when the bulk isn't there. The downside is that the baler driver is less incentivised to pick it all up... I work on around 1 t/ac for spring barley & 1.5 t/ac for wheat. Last year wheat did nearer 2 t/ac & I dare say better farmers with healthier soils get more straw/ac than I do on my depleted chalk.
