Within two weeks the schools will be breaking up for the summer holidays.

A week later all supermarkets will be trumpeting ‘Back to school’ sales of uniforms, stationery, school bags, shoes etc etc.

Then when our children are all back at school the supermarkets will have a massive promotion of Halloween and all its attendant wretchedly cheap junk and tat.

When All Hallows’ Eve has been and gone then Christmas goods take over all available shelf space, and we will be urged to rush off as if lemmings to buy all those must have sofas and carpets for delivery before that all important Christmas deadline.

‘Marketing is but the rattling of a stick in a bucket of swill.’

Ref my OP on grazing v baling excess grass, it was to ascertain views on demand for baled hay based on the season and fodder situation, on that point I'm still not sure if the value is in the bale or the belly. Ref the discussions it triggered about grazing "standing hay", we have done this many times, it requires management and the correct stock rates etc, but it works extremely well for the crop, the stock and the soil. Indeed the fields I would graze now have been grazed this way before and without doubt are less drought prone than other fields. Most would look at the field after grazing and see "wasted" grass, it's not, doing it this way means cattle consume some, the soil consumes some and some is left. No one system suits all farmers let alone farms.

Anyone know what I can expect to pay per acre for whole crop? Based in the south west? Someone local to me has offered me some but haven’t a clue what price this would usually be? Any indication would be welcomed, Thanks in advance
