So to sum up, at an auction the sellers talked the trade up and buyers talked the trade down, "shock horror" and in a removed post berated someone for having a reserve on their straw and not selling it but in the past have encouraged reserves to be left on pens of livestock.
if you leave a reserve, on a pen of stock, in mkt, auctioneer would soon tell, to high/low. Fodder auctions, high reserve, not queried so much, as is used, to set a trade price.

I hate bidding against a wall at straw sales. but thats how it goes

It’s the same at any sale not just straw... if there’s a reserve the auctioneer will take bids from fresh air too get there too try and get a sale.. if nobody is genuinely bidding though they’ll stop a couple of quid short of the reserve

Have you never seen a farmer bid on his own pen from behind the dealers to help raise the price?
of course i have, even done it myself, but always to a sensible level, and never really brought much home, but that is different to setting a high reserve, and running to that price, with little inclination to sell, but just to 'set' a mkt value, 2 totally different things, and, of course, unlike an abattoir, you have the option to take them home, if unhappy.
