Silage / Straw / Hay Price Tracker

In the 30 odd years we/I have been doing round bales we have only ever put 4 layers on but after observing how well rewrapped bales come out and reading on here, last year I wrapped everything 6 times and I’m pleased with the results.
When you all say put extra wrap on how many layers are you all talking about?

It’s still early to call the winter. The bad weather is usually in early February after that I think there will be a lot of folks wanting to move fodder which ever way the weather goes. Once there’s a hint of spring
Very true, can turn to shît February March, then cold April soon makes winter seem longer! Having said that it’s been mild here all the way through so far but been wet last couple of weeks, saved a lot of food up to that point an this last week has been dry although cold with another mild week forecast, can soon save some fodder when the stock aren’t stood round the feeder shivering the weight off them!! February is a short month if it’s kind an then you can start looking toward spring hopefully, I’m being offered cow hay nearly every week that was made in catchy weather an saving my well made wrapped stuff for later on or next year 👍

There’s a lot being held here. Winters are long so what’s for sale is pretty dear due to what it might make later we are buying some very heavy bales of strong stuff for cows but that’s about all that’s practical to buy at the moment.
Although the cost of what we are feeding is dear like you we have not managed to get through quite as much as last year by no means and long may the weather last. Every week it’s fairly open weather is a saving. We are using 30 less bales a week compared to this time last year

😂, £20 per ton is a better estimate for delivery in the south west not £40, are you trying to get some cheep of a neighbour, plenty being sold x farm at £60 ton with a ticket not a guess.
Say 22 tonne on an artic so at £20 ton that is £440 a load, can they really afford to run a lorry for a day/ pay a driver's wages and make a small profit at only £440 load??

Which is what time it would take to run from the SW to Kent and back again, even if they had a backload up it would still take most of a drivers daily hours to do a load from Kent to Devon.

Was said 2/3 years ago you need at least £500 a day for an artic and of course now it would be a lot higher!

Still 3/4 months left of winter yet and anything could yet happen ref fodder prices, esp as many farmers have not realized yet just how much bale wrap etc is going to be this harvest and some are still convinced the Fert price is going to drop drastically before they need to buy it for first cut!

Have you looked at the calendar recently??

we put extra wrap on as well, and try to make it as dry as possible, then it does keep. Our contractor is always saying, farmers ask for least wrap, and don't let it dry a bit, result, saggy bales that are difficult to move, and wont last much more than a year, but that's their choice.
We will have a large surplus of fodder this year, for a massive change. Our 'salvation' for the last few years, has been double cropping rye/vetches and maize, with very heavy yields, 30 ton fresh weight per acre, and that rye/vetch has provided the base ration for the winter. We are only just getting back to it ! 10 weeks time, cows should be out.
If we look to have a lot of fodder it gets dried out that bit more and then triple wrapped and stacked seperate as a reserve stack that will keep. We also stack it in the shade of a building as birds don’t seem to go near

3/4 months of winter???
Never in the world
Housed on xmas eve and fingers crossed turnout early/mid april. More years than not this is the case but do get odd years where they are in early dec and out early may. Warmer weather in march and the drying winds cuts straw usage and cows hunger. Theyve done too well this this autumn, first few early calves have been lumpers.

Just a hunch but Arctic ice growth is the best its been this century so when the seasons turn in the spring all this cold wll be released to the Northern Hemisphere so there is a high chance of a cold ,late spring especially in northern Scotland. The lack of aircraft in the sky may be part of the reason for such a cold Arctic and better ice growth.
I bet you won’t here that little positive gem of information on the news!!
