Depends on situation. I’ve been too a few sales up and down where if it weren’t for the auctioneer doing a bit of trotting the sellers would have been in for a real shafting. Plus I expect the auctioneer when I’m selling too run the buyers for every penny too!
When I was about 17 I went to a grass auction to be noisy, it was for a block of about 400 acres, as I stood there with the auctioneer and one other bloke I relised that this was going to get a bit awkward, the auctioneer kept looking at me to bid more than £1 for it but I only had 30 ewes at the time and had no intention of bidding, even a good auctioneer would struggle to take extra bids at that point.

First 6 lots or so all sold to buyers, names called out.
Next lot was a bit sticky, so he just knocked it down , no name but a thank you. Son pipes up who was that sold to, so he could write it down for Dad, only answer he could give was "me" as it hadn't made the reserve.

went to a farm sale, local, 128acres of grass keep, included at the last minute, thought it would be useful, bought the first lot at £4 acre, auctioneer, said, takes the lot. Not exactly what l expected, but split with a neighbour later.

That’s got to be painful for the vendor. I’m guessing it wasn’t sold through the same auctioneers the next year?

one off, and the auctioneers patience had been tried to breaking point, and it was,, get rid of it, for any price, and l was the only bidder on the first lot .................. and only bidder for the lot.
How did you come up with £4 if you where the only bidder?

he didn't take 2 bids of the wall.
to be fair, no-one, including the auctioneers, knew about it, till the sale morning, and l was the only one to have shown any interest.

reminds me of the time I bought a couple of fields of standing cereals and then as it was at farmyard in lots on conclusion of the sale spoke up and asked the auctioneer to put the straw up behing the combine .Ended up getting about 1/2 back . Another think that RT has knacked as sales of standing grain crops are pretty rare now

Wheat straw out of Goostrey today. 13t @ £80 14.25t @ £84. Beautiful clean straw. Take no harm at that. Might as well fill a few bays with straw as cattle are too dear for me.
Big bale wheat £80-84
Square barley unsold @ £88
Round barley (beautiful soft calf straw) £90 I think. Was the under bidder at it.
3rd quality big bale hay £84
1st quality seeds hay in 7ft squares £116
1st quality meadow hay in rounds £102.
Few people there watching but not much enthusiasm. I bid on every load bar the 3rd quality hay. Bought what wheat was available.

Didn’t really want it. But it just looked very cheap when it was in the 80’s. Got bugger all cattle inside now so I’m just stock piling for next winter really. After the next draw there will only be 25 bulls inside
