Averages and compared to last year.
WB av £114 up £10
WW av £111.60 up £31
WO av £97.74 up £17

I don't know what they look like tbh.

Wheat looked very strong money.

Exeter held the first standing straw sale of 2022 today.

Averages

Barley £110 acre
Wheat £70 acre
Oats £ 64 acre
Spring Barley £90 acre.

No idea on how much was actually sold.

Just out of interest

Your costs are too low!

Unless buying artic loads you will have very little hope of buying fert at £650 ton ( talk the price is about to go up again )

No way at contractor rates can you now cut and rake for £20 acre, mowing will be £16/17 acre let alone £8/9 acre for raking!

On cheaper to buy it, yes off the field but who knows by next winter, could easily be £40 round bale down here unless we get some serious long term rain both for the grass and maize as there is some very sick looking maize around !

On the plus side for the poor livestock farmers down here i walked a field of winter barley today entered in a standing straw sale next week and unless i have shrunk by a foot or so the last 12 months 🤣 then it was the highest/ thickest crop of Winter barley i have ever seen/walked in all my old years!

Easily 5ft tall but it certainly will not want any real heavy thunder rain on it over the next 2/3 weeks!

Also of all the barley fields i walked the grain sample would be the biggest and boldest on average i have ever seen!

On the downside the winter wheat crops i walked i was not that impressed with either thickness or height wise!

Shockingly bad around here!

With the exception of last weekend we have missed most of the heavy thunder showers/ rain the last 2 months!

I reckon grass yields are only on average about 60% of what they would normally be other years so far!

There are a few fields of maize that look well but most of it looks very sick currently!

Spring Barley is coming out in ear and some of it is only just over 1 FT tall !

There is an expectation that Ireland could be heading for a fodder shortage this winter due to lack of fertiliser applied this spring particularly in beef and sheep sectors. That could easily push the price up in UK with a fodder scheme to support purchasing.

They have a fodder scheme in Ireland and there’s been talk of fertiliser relief money too

The short answer is ....... no

Speaking to someone down Pontypool way getting round bale hay delivered in for £18 bale .....off a merchant !
Similar round here, any amount of small bale available at £2/bale or rounds at anywhere 10-20 ex field. everyone gone mad making hay with no thought as to the outlet for said stuff! And no means to store it! (Not livestock country, plenty of fussy pony patters) Maybe ought fill a shed and see what happen in the winter 🤔
